Sid Meier on monetisation

"In 2021, 79% of consumer spending on games globally was from in-app purchases, microtransactions and add-on content for games. This share is expected to grow."

"Sid Meier says that if major companies continue to focus on ways like this to monetise gaming, they risk losing the audience"

"There are lots of other ways that people can spend their leisure time"

PCG gets a link in the article :)

thats funny as there is a Sid Meier NFT (not made by him, but of him)

I am sure I heard he was actually interested in them, seems the tide has turned and now he is against it. Its possible I am mistaking him for someone else.

Quite possibly, anyone serious about the industry would have to study and evaluate them.

I read it that Sid's point is summarized as "we need to be sure we realise how critical gameplay is". That doesn't preclude monetization, and of course can't since US public companies are required by law to maximize shareholder value.
