Random Hardware topics

NZXT's reputation must be tanking after the whole class action lawsuit thing they got into. I'm seeing a lot of their hardware online at pretty good discounts. They have a MATX case on sale for $50, normally $80, which looks to be one of the best you can buy at that price. At least their cases are better than their rent-a-PC program.

Only have one thing from them and as long as it keeps working, I won't worry about reputations. It was rated highly so I won't worry, that and they don't make it themselves... very few make their own PSU. Only Seasonic and Superflower are 1st party, rest of them use someone else... possibly one of the two already mentioned in this sentence.

I don't follow hardware makers really, apart from Samsung (had about 4 monitors from them and all my ssd have been from them so far) I generally don't have favourites when it comes to hardware. Okay, I did have 4 Asus motherboards but I got in a rut, and they always worked fine for me. Guess I also like Western Digital hdd but only as only one die in about 20 years.

note... one day get my 5th panel from Samsung... but Asus make monitor. I can't escape them.

Perhaps I have seen the results of people following random youtube videos before too many times to fall for them.

You can't get more VRAM by changing a registry key
All this actually does is possibly increase the amount of shared ram the GPU can use. The GMM registry key is used to "fake" or increase dedicated video memory (VRAM) for Intel integrated graphics to help run games that require higher VRAM limits

Your PC already shares half your ram with the GPU but only if/when the game you are playing exceeds the onboard VRAM

Jrdtl2M.jpeg

only real answer is get a better GPU with more VRAM.
Buying more ram is also a bandaid but its an expensive one right now. More ram you have, more share you can give. You don't really want to use ram... its way slower than vram and will cause lag.

I wonder how slow a game would run if you shared more ram with that key, than you actually have, and it had to use page file on a hdd instead. That would be fun

One problem with alternate GPU brands is going to be game support.
Maybe not for new games after its released but Intel still playing catchup on all the old games.
We'll see how they do on drivers. That's going to be a huge hurdle. But I know one thing for sure, if it performs the way they say it will perform, and they stick to the "lower cost" model, gamers will buy the absolute hell out of it. And by comparing this to the 5090, they are absolutely going after the gaming market. The 5090 is a hobbyist card for AI. Data centers aren't likely to buy 100 of these to replace one true AI workstation.

Never mind. These won't really play games well. They are intended for scientific simulations. However, they have stated that they want to enter the gaming market with their next GPUs. What's cool about these is that the VRAM is expandable to 160 GB.

What the hell is AMD doing? I guess they don't like it when you point out their anti-consumer practices, or the fact that this chip costs $900 and is only marginally better than it's predecessor, the Ryzen 9 9950X3D.

I'm a little disappointed that Gamer's Nexus took this as an opportunity for a political rant.

The Hardware Unboxed guys replicated the GN Image in their video to point of even copying the hair... his hair is shorter than that normally. So no, they don't look that similar in real life

They are both called Steve, that is where similarities end. One from USA, other Australia, not even related.

As for price, its the same price here now as the 9950x3d was at launch, so its really not that much more. I know as I did think about buying the 9950x3d last year but its price at time put me off. Now that its not the flagship, its price has dropped.

AMD had already pointed out its performance wasn't that much better than the single X3d version, reviewers just wanted it. Now they have it and see AMD wasn't lying. Releasing it now at least means the next gen 950x3d version will likely only include the 2 cache version as they have the tech now, might as well use it.

A lot of GN's videos have been politically slanted as of recently. Although I agree and align with most of what they say, I do wish the main channel videos were just focused on the hardware and such. They have a second channel focused on consumer advocacy that could be where the political videos stay. They're journalists at the end of the day, journalists that love PC hardware.

The thumbnail honestly made me laugh really hard. Hardware Unboxed always has some of the funniest thumbnails.

It's hard to say the real reason why AMD didn't send review samples to most of the biggest tech channels and personalities. Linus Tech Tips didn't even get one, he's got to be the biggest tech Youtuber on the site. GN has been pretty harsh about AMD's other practices not directly related to the hardware, such as company policy changes and political standings, but it's hard to say if that is the reason because I'm certain most other tech Youtubers didn't go as hard on that angle as GN did.

This improvements in this chip are almost exclusively for workstations, so that could be a reason why they didn't send it to more gaming focused channels. The gaming numbers aren't great, productivity numbers are better, and AMD could have been afraid customers would confuse bad gaming numbers to meant a bad chip overall. Just my speculation. Very strange why they didn't just send them out as always.

I feel its too soon to comment on story until we get some thing from AMD. It is possibly a stuff up as I don't think they play these games normally.

I didn't see many US channels getting it, Hardware Unboxed are in Australia, they got it ahead of time, and the only other PC hardware site I saw with a video are outside of the states, this one is based in UK

this one in EU

This is USA but many of his videos are workstation or server related.

Its a productivity CPU, they already have the two fastest gaming CPU so the biggest gains on this are in Graphical or scientific programs. Its pointless for gamers. Streamers might like it. Maybe.

I deleted that right after I posted. I hadn't watched the videos. I wasn't familiar with the second guy and didn't realize it was a joke.

Not sure what is going on. They are obviously very familiar with Gamer's Nexus. Moving him to contact through a 3rd party and not sending him the CPU had to be intentional, and there was apparently no additional information provided by AMD. However, if they aren't pushing these for gaming, they may have simply cut back their marketing expenses.

The problem I have with it, as a moderate, is that very few people in either political party can discuss topics like this without going off the rails. His list of people at the beginning is straight from a conspiracy handbook.

and @Colif The more that I think about this, the only logical explanation I can come up with is that since this product is very niche, they had a very small marketing budget and kept the review distribution to a bare minimum. AND, if you are doing that, you would be stupid to send them to people you know are going to slam them. They aren't obligated to send someone a CPU just because they are famous. That's not blacklisting. That's being smart. Of course, Gamer's Nexus dude is one of the most vindictive YouTubers I'm aware of, so naturally this is going to blow up a little, but I doubt AMD really cares. No one is going to stop buying AMD products because they skipped this dude once.

I would say this is perhaps the most logical explanation, though the fact that AMD is/was constantly monitoring hardware news websites and leaker social media accounts, I feel there is a deeper reason than just playing it smart by not sending workstation CPUs to gaming hardware channels. The leaker account thing makes sense from a company POV, learning a product you're making has been leaked leads to a whole different can of worms, but I'm just not sure. I think AMD is being weird and shady in ways I can't quite figure out.

Here's something to consider, though. A lot of big tech channels were excluded, but GN is the only one drumming up political conspiracies and only GN and Hardware Unboxed are claiming to be blacklisted (based only on pulling up a list of people excluded and then quickly looking at their channels--I could be wrong, which would surprise no one 🙂 ). The rest have just shrugged it off. I looked up GN's history, and it shows a pattern of gross overreactions any time anyone anywhere says anything that could be considered critical of GN. He is overly sensitive (me too) and over-reacts (as I do). This means, to me, that while he's undoubtedly reliable in his tech reviews, when he goes off reacting to things like this, you have to just roll your eyes and wait for him to get over it.

I guess that, technically, a lot of channels were "blacklisted" for this product, but it isn't reasonable to assume that all these channels are, as a group, blacklisted for any other products.

I use GN for case reviews as they do the best out there.
They are a useful resource regardless of the occasional drama.

I don't watch every video they make. I don't listen to everything he says.

A channel I use more for future news gets info from "contacts" that are probably seen as leakers. He talked about the 9950x3d2 5 months ago. The 9950x3d2 was hardly a secret. It had been expected for a while now.

He is talking about AM7 parts now, but he is really careful about what he reveals or how he does it - to point of recreating the images to hide the sources. He also only reveals something if its been confirmed by other sources. He doesn't deal in rumours.

I generally ignore the channels that report on rumours.

You doing okay? Any news on your monitor?

Getting a good deal on a 2nd hand GPU is becoming hard to do

The fake cards are getting hard to spot
So apparently what happens is that a manufacturer ends up with a bunch of cards that don't work, and they toss them in the scrap heap and sell them to anyone who wants them, supposedly for recycling. Honest people strip them of working components and reuse/resell them and then junk/recycle the rest. Not so honest people sell them on the dark web to scammers or on Alibaba to anyone. So says Google Gemini.

That's not the story for all fake GPUs, but apparently that's how a lot of them get spread around.

Blames Zed for asking about his new monitor - Amazon cancelled my order again and now the monitor unavailable on their site so I am back at square 1

It would be totally pointless to buy an older model now, I would forever be wondering what I didn't get. It was a thought as I could have it now and stop waiting... good thing its a long weekend, it makes me resistant to rash moves. The 4 day week after also makes orders pointless, 3 days to clear payment, its not going to be delivered on one day (all of the companies I order from aren't local enough to do 1 day).

So it gives me time to forget.

Other sites have it showing as coming soon or open to pre order, but unlike Amazon I need to pay upfront for it. After waiting two months and looking every day, I am a little over this by now. So I wait and see what I think tomorrow.

I have set one site up to notify me once they actually get it. Saves paying for it before I get it. I bought my ram from them last year... $259 at the time... its now 1100.

Wonder if I get it before the 25th of May as that is when I made this PC last year.

Another reminder to just not pre order anything. Twice I got penalised for being early... both times they accused transaction of being suspect, and cancelled the bloody thing. Come on... same order, same thing twice.

Was it because I hadn't bought anything else?? I didn't want anything else off Amazon. Now I need to cancel my subscription as I never really wanted it - only took for the 2 day delivery window... how ironic, they couldn't even do 2 months.

While looking on other sites for the monitor, I noticed prices:
  • An 8tb Samsung 9100 Pro only costs $3500 now.
  • I could buy a 9950x3d2 for 1500... not that I want one.
Only thing I might buy while I wait is a UPS.

This is not normal Amazon behavior at all. There is either something suspicious with your account or with the sellers. Or it's possible that the sellers realized they are over-committed and canceled the order and just marked it as a "suspicious transaction". It has to be something like that because Amazon isn't reviewing orders, etc. They are just responding to something the seller has done,

Other than that, I was going to question whether you ordered from a scam seller that Amazon got rid of, and it was the seller that was suspicious, not you, but scammers would require you to pay immediately, I'm assuming. Or maybe not. It would actually be kind of genius to collect people's orders during a preorder period then activate them all at once and run away.
