Though really I could buy it now, I feel one new purchase this month is enough. I still haven't installed the GPU so I use it for a while on this monitor before buying that one.

Not sure how often I would use the 1080p 480hz mode but I can always ignore it

some dual mode monitors coming next year offer 1000hz... but you need to run at 720p
So the race to be the fastest is leading to postage stamp size resolutions.
Is this really progress?

Seems to me we need to wait another 6 years before the feature is worth spending ludicrous amounts of money on. As it stands I am willing to wait. Seems Diablo 4 has it but according to video its almost impossible to tell. As he says, if you can't tell, what is the point of taking the performance hit?

You may not need to lock them if the monitor uses vrr, it will match the output of the GPU and it will be smooth

Forgot to hit post on this yesterday lol.

For now I’m sticking with 1080p and I’m glad I did. My pc could handle 1440p but not in every game without compromising graphical settings. Compared to the old TV the quality is so much better even still being at 1080p so I’m glad I went with it.

The low response times makes using Frame Generation so much better. With the old tv, turning on frame gen resulted in massive latency lag. Now it’s almost unnoticeable when I turn it on in Oblivion Remastered. Plus with FreeSync I can use FSR without needed to enable vsync, or in the case with some games it wouldn’t allow me to turn on vsync with FSR enabled.

Another thing is being able to upgrade to FSR4 via the Radeon software if the game does not natively support it. Oblivion Remaster resulted in better clarity and a few extra frames when upgrading to FSR4.

I still have to play around with the settings to hit a sweet spot. Sometimes locking the frame rate below the full 180hz results in slight ghosting. Wonder if that's just a VA panel issue, I've heard someone mention that. After some tweaking I can get it to go away, typically by unlocking frame rate or dropping refresh rate in game. I dropped refresh rate to 120hz in Windows settings and set game to 120fps cap and that strangely resulted in some ghosting, but changing it back to 180hz removed it. My monitor does have overclocking settings, but I think I'll leave them alone for the sake of longevity of this screen.

The VA panel does produce very nice blacks and color, I mean as nice as a standard LED panel gets. Previous TV would show black as washed out and grey, this shows much more proper black to my eyes. So far I'm extremely pleased with it.

Wait. You mean after all the crap I heard about Nvidia framegen from AMD people, AMD has framegen, too? Why aren't they protesting and making angry videos? Where is the lamentation of their women? Why aren't they talking about fake frames and lag? Why aren't they talking with great disdain about how blurry the images they haven't seen yet are? AMD gets a pass because why again? Because they prioritize consoles? What's the reasoning again?

AMD Have 2 different types of Frame Gen. They have the FSR version which is built into games, and then they have Fluid Motion Frames which is built into the drivers and allows you to use it on any game. Even if they don't have frame gen built in.

Difference is how accurate it is, as the version built into games can get more game data and looks better, whereas AFMF is guessing what is next. AFMF 3 is meant to change the guessing and be able to get game data meaning any game, regardless of whether its got frame gen built in, can use the tech.

By the way, I wasn't talking about you. I was talking about the endless videos put out by YouTubers.

However, they will still have to guess the next frame, there is no way around that. They are just getting more data to make the guesses better, as I believe you pointed out. How they get more data by being baked into the game, I have no idea. All this stuff is always baked into the game. You have to submit screenshots and videos to Nvidia so that their framegen knows what everything looks like before it is put into the game. In any event, like you, I mostly play games that aren't demanding and cap the frames to match my monitor, although none of the games I'm currently playing have any sort of framegen anyway.
 
I watched a video on current version of AFMF and it seems it lets you choose, it can either repeat the previous frame or guess what the next frame will look like. Mine is set to repeat by default.

In the GN video he showed that in some games, upscaling looks better than native 4k which isn't supposed to happen. He blamed the AA

That sounds completely idiotic, to repeat the last frame. I'm sure that somehow that helps, but I don't understand it.

I've never seen those options in any of the games I play.

I am not sure if I did it correctly or not, but I was under the assumption that you had to enable Frame Gen to enable AFMF. The software does let you use both at the same time, but when doing so it introduced terrible ghosting on my monitor. Disabling AFMF got rid of the ghosting. Frame Gen works really good in most games I've tested it on, but I do get the occasional ghosting on the monitor due to it. FSR alone does not introduce any ghosting.

I'm not sure why some people praised AMD as the patron saints of gaming. Their AI ambitions are just as large as Nvidia's, just without the same amount of capital. I get the rasterization-only crowd, but it's becoming increasingly evident that we are hitting a technological brick wall. I'm no expert in this subject at all, but I keep hearing we can only scale down so much and put so many components on a chipboard. Unless we want to go back to having computers the size of a bedroom or are able to achieve pico-level lithography, it's going to be incredibly difficult to keep making such massive leaps in performance. AI upscaling and frame generation helps with this, though it's not yet perfect, especially frame gen.

I used to be that way before I had good enough hardware to properly use these features, and now that I can run them, I see all the benefits they provide. It's not perfect especially on a game-by-game basis, there's lots of room to improve, but overall it's been very beneficial to me and helping me hit higher frames. I hope the work to improve these technologies never ends.

It depends what Profile you use in Adrenaline as to whether its active. The two Hyper RX Profiles enable it

I am not sure what runs if you use Quality as AMD just says
Quality Enables the optimal settings required to improve latency and enhance visual quality for gaming.

Default probably doesn't enable it.
Custom should be obvious.

I have hyper RX set as Global experience so any new game I play auto uses it.

FSR 4 reduces the ghosting, AFMF 2.1 is better than what came before.

We there now with GPU. Nvidia 5090 uses so much power that its power cables have a tendency to burn (but then a Sapphire RX 9070 that uses same power connector also had same problem and it doesn't use 600watts of power so its really a problem with the connector) and since its not reasonable to use 4 or more 8 pin power connectors on a GPU, we sort of stuck. GPU need more power to keep improving

Nvidia worked out years ago that raster was not going to keep getting better and switched to selling us on RT when really the first 5 generations of the RT cards really aren't powerful enough to run RT unless you buy the top 2 cards in the series. RT was just a bait and switch and its still not good enough now that they have switched away from making GPU for us and much prefer to sell them to AI.

I have it set to default and change the settings for different games. Some games I don't need to use upscalers, some only support older versions of it, while others allow the upgrade via Adrenaline. So on Default everything is turned off except Anti-Lag, then in games that support the upgrade I'll change them individually. GTA V Enhanced is where I was getting ghosting issues with AFMF but disabling it got rid of the ghosting almost entirely. I haven't tried AFMF by itself without FG if that's even possible, but I hit a sweet spot with in-game graphics settings and Adrenaline to hit a rock solid 120fps so I don't mess with it anymore.

Oblivion Remastered on the other hand, I may want to mess about with AFMF. I get really good frames in most areas of the game but there are a few areas that tank the FPS to around 70-80, while staying around 100-120 most other times besides being in an interior location where it shoots up to 180. FG in that game gave me the worst instance of ghosting, but FSR 4 alone works perfectly.

I'm learning that with this card and monitor, I still have to do lots of configuration to find a perfect middle ground between high frames and good visuals. Once I do, I don't touch the settings anymore.

Early RT cards were prepping us for the future, and the future is eye candy over optimization unfortunately. That's why I was so surprised to learn the PS5 and XSX did not support 60fps natively on every game, they still have large amounts of games that only run at 30fps. They also have "performance" modes which reduce graphics quality to hit 60fps. If we lived in a perfect world and optimization was higher prioritized than graphics quality, games wouldn't run below 60fps even on consoles. We may have hit a hardware limit, but I think there is still lots of room for software developers to improve their products.

I was having a conversation with someone on the Steam forums and they made a good observation: 15-20+ years ago it was very common for game companies to have their own bespoke engine. Maybe modified off pre-existing engines, but it was their own nevertheless. With the rise of licensable engines, all of those elite level programmers with abundant knowledge on how game engines work were pushed out for cheaper hires who were proficient in the popular engines. Now instead of building an engine from scratch, these companies can just license one like UE5 or Unity, hire from the endless amount of people who know how to use them, and save money in the process.

I'm getting off track but anyways, I feel that is pretty accurate to where we are at in the games industry. Money over product, but that's how it's always been I suppose.

Most of the games I play set me on max and I don't need to change any settings. But they aren't very demanding. Entire time I had a 7900xt I never actually played anything that makes it struggle... outside of a benchmark for that monkey game. But it doesn't like AMD cards.

Yep. Flashing lights over gameplay as well. Distractions. I had hoped that once we had amazing graphics, they might turn to making games fun. but now I know they just make another reason to make you buy something new.
 
I've been using the Gigabyte Control Center to play with my RGB, and I put all the RGB on green-static, except for my RAM, which I put on red and have it flashing. I think it's funny because with the flashing red lights it looks like something has gone wrong.

The only problem is that the two RAM lights, after a couple of hours, are no longer flashing in unison.

I think maybe it's because they are just so complex and feature complete now. Trying to recreate one, even if you were just iterating off of your own engine, would be an incredible undertaking.

I've been playing a lot with Unreal, and just as an example, it has a photorealistic character creator. It has a strong physics engine. It handles global illumination. It handles a lot of animation work, including syncing lips to the voice acting, etc. And, of course, everyone knows about their Nanite stuff.

I'm not sure about costs. You have to pay Epic 5 percent. That seems like a steal, but if you are a major developer and you sell 10 million copies of a $70 game, you are going to owe Epic about $35 million.

that isn't a PC, its a Christmas tree 😀

Relying on one engine has down sides. All the games start to look the same

This Youtube channel is trying to highlight its problems, they have been for years

My new monitor is a moving target, might be one of these

But its so new it only got announced today.

The gpu stand that comes with the new GPU is just a pole that you put in between GPU and PSU shroud to hold it up. Nothing wrong with that but the best place to put the pole, to support card, is between fans 2 and 3 on the GPU.
Perfectly fine if you also don't have 2 fans under the GPU which perfectly line up with those 2 fans.
I didn't really want to move my fans, I feel they in the best place now, so I had to find an alternative.

I was just going to use the stand I have now but its black... and would have been only black item in the case... stand out like sore thumb. So ordered one of these

Its transparent. Should fit where current one is . New card is taller than current GPU so not concerned about contacting GPU. The Air cooler is taller than the new card so not concerned about it having space to stand between glass and GPU.

Interesting comparison
Almost my last PC as it was when I got it, I had a 3600xt with 2070 Super
Compared to almost my new PC - I don't have a 5090

The MSI site only 1 hour old.

They both use same panel so it comes down to which you like look of more. The Asus seems to have more features.

UWQHD resolution. 3440 x 1440p
only way to get close to 1440p without 27inch screens.
Curved screen... never used curved yet. At 34 inch it makes sense.
2 inches more than current screen isn't that much.

No one has them since they only showing at CES now... so I guess I wait a few months, like every other product I find on day one.

Looks like my new GPU can run that resolution fine, maybe not at 360hz but the added speed gives more overhead for frame gen. VRR means the speed difference between GPU and monitor isn't as big a problem as my last 4k was.
