Hey Y'all,

I (who know nothing about computers) have been put in charge of figuring out what PSU to replace in our new (3 mo. old) computer by my work. Hence I come here, where much wiser people can bestow knowledge a lowly person such as myself.

We had a Thermaltake Smart 850W 80 PLUS Bronze, but pretty sure it already crapped out. Hopefully it didn't take the whole computer with it. Looking around this doesn't seem like the best brand to begin with. The PSU died while we were 3D modeling Computer specs listed below, link to the product here. It is under warranty but if this is not a good PSU we don't want to fry our machine.

We use the computer for 3D modeling and rendering. We use the programs Fusion360, Rhino, and V-Ray. Cost is not an issue, we want something reliable. No need for RGB or anything aesthetic either. We have quite a bit of room in the tower. I assume 850W is enough power by the calculators I plugged the computer specs into.

Please help a poor soul out!

Computer specs (more detailed specs in link above):
  • CPU 16-Core AMD Threadripper 2950X 3.5GHz
  • Hydro Series 240mm Quiet Edition Water / Liquid CPU Cooler
  • RAM 128GB DDR4 || MB Asus ROG Strix X399
  • 8TB HDD || M.2 SSD 1TB NVMe Samsung 970
  • GPU nVidia GeForce RTX 2060 6GB
  • PSU Thermaltake Smart 850W 80 PLUS Bronze
  • DVD 24X Asus +/-RW || Wi-Fi Wireless-N PCI-x Adapter

I second @Oussebon's recommendation. Those are high quality units and will give you peace of mind for your system. Something like that is what I would buy if I was in charge of this system.

Since you are purchasing this for a work computer for use in a professional environment, there are some even higher end units than you can consider if you're using freely allocated work funds. The Corsair HX850 Platinum is an even higher end unit with that same 10 year warranty. The Seasonic Prime PX-850 Platinum is also very good and has an even longer 12 year warranty.

Those are just options to consider depending on whether or not your boss would be more impressed with you saving money or getting a top-end uber PSU.

I always (always) go with SeaSonic. Haven't had a single unit fail during use in the past 15+ years. They also get the highest ratings when properly tested by folks such as Johnny GURU
