Building my first gaming PC and im new to the forum also. Ive been going back and forth about processors and i cant decide. I narrowed it down to amd ryzen 5 and 7. Microcenter has deals on these processors.

Ryzen 5 2600x: $80
Ryzen 5 3600x: $160
Ryzen 7 $3700x: $260

I purchased the ryzen 5 2600x thinking i was going to do a simple build along with a msi b450 tomahawk mobo I was planning to get a gtx 1660 super but ended up getting a gigabyte 2070 super haha. So now my build has changed and im not sure if i should go with a different processor.

My parts i have so far
32gb ballistix 3200mhz ram
Evga supernova 650w GD power supply
MSI b450 Tomahawk mobo
500GB Seagate m.2 NVMe
480GB sandisk ssd
Cosair computer case (forgot the model)
GiGabyte rtx 2070 Super OC

now i just need to decide on a processor. Im leaning towards the 3600x because i dont see i would need the 3700x or justify for the 100$ difference. Other than playing games, I would also do video creating content with my gopro, photo editing and possibly streaming.
I just need more input.

I'm running a 3600 with a 2070 super and it works great. I don't do any workstation tasks with my HTPC, so I don't miss the 2 extra cores the 3700x would offer. That said, if you're editing video and streaming, you might benefit from it a bit more. If you're the kind of person who likes to keep their hardware for more than 2-3 years, you might be better off spending the extra $100 now rather than regretting it later.

These are all good processors at their respective pricepoints, so it really just depends on what you want to spend.

The Ryzen 5 2600x is the best value of the three, no question. At $80 it is a STEAL. Getting that level of performance for under $100 is awesome.

The Ryzen 5 3600x is going to give you decently better performance (maybe 20-30%) over the 2600x. AMD made really nice improvements with Ryzen 3000 series and this CPU benefits from them. The performance difference will be more or less noticeable depending on how you use it. I would consider this one if the extra $80 isn't a big deal to you, and if you want to get a little more longevity out of your CPU before the next upgrade.

The Ryzen 7 3700x is competing in a different tier, so it's hard to compare it to the Ryzen 5s. It is a fantastic CPU for $260, considering that it often sells for $300 and is even a good value at that price.

You really can't go wrong. All of those deals are excellent. It just comes down to how big of a dent you want to put in your wallet!

My personal pick would be the Ryzen 5 3600x for the performance and cost. It still outperforms the Ryzen 7 2700X (which is what I have), and compared to the Ryzen 7 3700x, you're only getting a modest performance boost for $100 more. The Ryzen 5 3600x is the best value for cost/performance. And the 2070 Super will definitely pair nicely with the Ryzen 5 3600X, as it's only a tad slower than the RTX 2080.

What is the read/write speed of your M.2 NVMe SSD? That will help with video editing/rendering, too.

Depends on what you want to do with the rig. If you're only gonna game and stream, the 2600 is already plenty enough. If the 3600'a extra prixe is not a problem for you, and want to probably use it for a couple years longer, go with that. For big workloads, creative work and content creation that needs a lot of power, always go for the big guns (I know, Captain Obvious). Consider your budget first and what you need it for

Hi

Like most others said 3600X is a fair boost over the previous gen in single thread. Its likely (though not certain) that Ryzen 4000 will be supported by your board.

The new consoles are based off of a 8/16 Ryzen so its possible that games will start requiring more in a year or three. If thats the case and 12 threads becomes a bottleneck in a couple of years update the firmware and drop in an upgrade.

I'd just add that it looks like the B450 tomahawk has one of the better VRM setups on a B450 boards so you'll probably be fine to do that if required.

I don't think you will go wrong with either CPU. They are both good value for money. Get the one you can afford. You say you will also use your PC for photo editing and streaming, so I would probably go for the 3700x, if I were you.

If you already have the 2600x, I would not go for 3600x. I'd either go for 3700x, or wait until the 4000 series releases later this year. 2600x should hold you off until then.
