Launching a GTA-like game on PC if GTA 6 only releases on consoles might not actually be a bad idea.

I think its a great idea and funny as well.

"This is a one-of-a-kind bike, and the only way to get it is to drop by the Doom: The Dark Ages launch event being held at Culture Kings on George Street, Sydney Australia on Friday 16th May 2025 from 7pm-9pm AEST. Those who manage to attend will have a shot at winning the bike as well as joining in with the other launch festivities"

Well darn, i was going to just whip my wallet out and buy one! Man i wanna see some on-the-road photos of that to whichever Aussie is lucky enough to win it.

Before Microsoft took over Skype, it was a phenomenal product. There was no tinkering with settings. You just launched it, called someone(s) and it worked. Meanwhile, Discord requires a Ph.d in MC Escher Geometry to figure out where everything is hidden in their UI.

Also, developers use Discord as an echo chamber dictatorship safe room, and there are few things more depressing than looking at a Discord server with about 8000 different channels....so thanks again, Microsoft.

I have played the original mod and liked it a lot better than DotA, mostly because DotA is really hard and my friends and I kept losing against the AI while Battleships was a lot more casual.

I suspect this new game will just devolve into a sweat fest as well though, it seems like pretty much all competitive PvP games do nowadays.

Here's a better official explanation than the Twitter link included in the article:

It seems absolutely ridiculous to me that you can force someone to lose tons of money just by starting frivolous lawsuits against them and then drawing those out for as long as possible.

Yeah, and I read the other day that Nintendo had filed yet another lawsuit against someone else. I really am to the point now where I'm pretty sure I'll never give Nintendo another dollar.

First of all, I'm a little concerned that the mod developers won't go public with why their project was in violation of Steam's Terms of Service. They talked to Valve over the phone in March, so they know what the problem was, but they refuse to mention it. Before I pick up my pitchfork and head to Washington, I want this information. For all we know, the modders could have implemented dropping their own cosmetics or using CS servers. Because the thing to remember here is that the problem was caught first by an automated process.

Second of all, even if we get that information and decide Valve should have let it go, there is still the fact that Valve, like any company, has the legal right to protect its IPs. If they think this mod will siphon off 250,000 people a day from the new Counter Strike, then we are talking about Valve losing a ton of money. Personally, I wouldn't let them do that, and I don't think any rational person would just let modders take away $1 million per day or more from my cash cow just because I wanted to be nice.

They strangled the golden goose and now trying to profit off what eggs they have left. I don't recall last new game they released (not part of a franchise) that was big.

They sell games to an audience who doesn't realise its old mechanics with new graphics (wait, am I talking about Oblivion?). When your audience is kids, they aren't old enough to have seen it all before.

Nostalgia is what keeps them alive. Mostly from parents who remember them from past.

They're still huge, even outside of kid demographics. Yeah, most of the kids I know (besides mine, because I'm morally opposed to it) have a Switch, but on another small(ish) forum I'm on, people are just constantly gushing about Nintendo.

When I bring-up stuff like this, I'm the spoil sport, because everyone wants their Nintendo games, even if they're bland and derivative. Personally, I don't understand, but whatever, I guess; Nintendo will get no more money from me. Though I might buy a Switch...second-hand...when they're easily hackable and I can easily pira--uh, acquire their games at a steep discount. Or if there's a Steam Deck 2 and it can emulate well...

I have had 4 Nintendo consoles. they have made some good games before.
I haven't looked since the Wii really as I don't care about motion controls that much. That and consoles were only useful when my PC was bad at playing games. That hasn't been the case for about 10 years now, so I stopped looking at them.
I feel they have been living off the past glory. Their only answer to threats like Palworld is legal, not accepting challenge to get better. That shows a lack of creative thought.
Under the kid friendly shell is a monster.

Well, to be honest i thought an 80/100 wasnt too far of a stretch, although the author here seems to make it sound more like a 50 or 60 and was just being respectful.

So one thing id like to say i disagree with here is he says "what worked in hour one of The Dark Ages—spamming my shotguns, shield dashing away from danger, and deflecting anything colored green—worked in hour 17, and that's a huge bummer".

As an old FPS player, i think that its quite the opposite of a huge bummer. If i can just shoot and hack my way through enemy 1 vs enemy 3445575 fine, i wont tire of that because of the game its in ie Doom. Some of the otehr complaints from teh author i think can be fixed with patches and updates but its sad that those are needed.

Author says the jumps weak and exploration can be boring with nothing going on for stretches of area which doesnt sound fun to me either so hopefully its not as dire as they made it sound.

I can understand other peoples tempered expectations of the game, me included but the Doomguy statue was too good for me to pass up lol.

Nintendo threatening players now. They are going to brick your Switch (your personal property) if you mod a game. As I said the other day, not another dime from me. If I were fabulously wealthy, I'd buy a Switch and start modding games. I'd mod them every day. And then when Nintendo bricked my personal property, off to court we'd go.

Yeah, that sounds very like the movie Brazil. Come to think of it, the company repair men are even dressed like they might be in a Nintendo game.

I might take it back, I think they make good consoles.
I had to think of the last 1st party game I liked on their consoles...
F Zero? Nintendo 64. Maybe that was the last one.

I mostly played 2nd party games I think. Most of their 1st party games were always aimed at an audience younger than me.

I didn't grow up with Nintendo, they showed up when I was in my 20's

To me the Switch was trash.

Without the Switch you think we get Steam Deck? handheld gaming had been abandoned by just about everyone before that.

Its a great console with great games and has sold astronomical numbers worldwide. Nintendo suck in a lot of ways about their IP and emulation and I understand those arguments, but to say they out and out suck at making games I cant see any sensible argument for.

This is a win! Hope its sustainable long term as theres a few more of them than Nextlander.

They are the only company who has released successful handheld consoles (not counting PC/Steam deck) and managed to do it for decades. They did keep the format alive.
The only handheld I had from them was a Game & Watch though.
I had an original black and white Gameboy as a kid, an N64 for a bit and now the Switch. I'm not any kind of Nintendo super fan.

Have fond memories of Mario Odyssey when my partner was pregnant and feeling sick early on she used to like to watch me play it for a couple of hours because it was so dumb and random it took her mind off of things. A really fun game to mess around in as a sandbox, especially now with a little kid.

She didnt like to watch BOTW though, that game was really good. Both of those would be near the top in my GOG Galaxy library in terms of hours spent. I also played Dark Souls for the first time on the Switch and that would be too.

I may have only owned 3.
  1. I know I had a snes.
  2. I can remember buying the N64 and needing to wait 6 months for more than 2 games.
  3. Wii was the last one I bought.
I mistakenly thought I had a NES but I am not sure I did. I probably rented one a few times. It is 40 years ago now.

I never really got into Mario. I never played any Pokimon games, so many of their big series just don't cause nostalgia in me. If they had kept making F Zero instead of Mario Kart I may have hung around longer.

You may not be a super fan, but I despise them. They seem to wake up every day and ask themselves what evil they can do. I loved the N64 and Wii and thought the Switch was a great idea that was poorly implemented. It's a very mediocre console that is painful to hold and nearly impossible to never drop. I gave up using it almost immediately due to near constant hand cramps after short times of usage.

The games are mostly for children, but they are okay as far as that goes. I certainly would never say that Nintendo sucks at making games. They just don't make games for me. Breath of the Wild was the most over-hyped game of the last 20 years, maybe ever. I forced myself to play it for two or three hours on that torture device, and never had any interest in playing it again. Craftopia, by the Palworld devs, was a better game in its original form, though they rebooted it for some reason, and I don't like it as much now.

Well then I'm not here to convince you and your gargantuan hands personally :D
