Help needed with sons upgrade for Christmas

Hello all,

Hope I am following the pin for suggestions to asking for help. To start, I know nothing about gaming PCs but my son is very into it. He asked for an upgraded CPU for Christmas (core i7-9700k) to go with his current MBD (TUF B365M-plus gaming). In doing my research it appeared this CPU wasn’t a huge upgrade over his current (i5-8400), however, this is one of the best that will match his MBD. I recommend he upgrade his MBD to get a faster CPU in the same price range as the i7-9700k. Specifically I was looking at getting him the i5-14600KF with either ASRock B760M PG Riptide Wi-Fi or Gigabyte B760M gaming plus WiFi DDR4.

Would upgrading the MBD to allow a better CPU be the move here?

Any help is greatly appreciated!!! Thanks

Thanks!

So you think the 12600 over the 14600is the way to go?

If using an unlocked 13 / 14 gen cpu then I would look at a Z690 / Z790 chipset (board) for the better VRM's so that you don't suffer thermal throttling.
Do you think it’s worth it or should I go with the setup you previously mentioned? If I went with the other are there other components like the Mrmory I would need?

Sorry, like I said, I don’t know computers well. Your help is GREATLY appreciated!

Sorry, I guess the question would be is the Z690/790 with the 14600 substantially better than a B760 with the 12600?
