Making a top 10 of a category that is as broad as video games makes no sense to begin with. But this list is really a top 10 of first- and third-person action-adventure/RPG games with Resident Evil 4 as a bit of an odd one out.

I'd personally add Fallout: New Vegas and one of the Assassin's Creed games in there myself and based off of ratings it seems Black Myth: Wukong might deserve a spot as well, but it's not a terrible list if you restrict it to that category.
I think Resident Evil 4 and The Witcher 3 both definitely belong in that list. RE4 was not just fantastic fun, it influenced a whole genre. The Witcher 3 was just insanely well done and the writing was at a level that you rarely find in a AAA game. Graphics were the top of its era. It is easily one of the most beloved games of all time.

Personally, another game I would add to that list is Portal 2. Even though I like Satisfactory better, I think Factorio belongs here. It was a founding member of the now huge automation/factory genre. Minecraft? It's completely nuts to leave that off the list.

  • Top 10 most fun games when they came out.
  • Top 10 most fun games two years after they came out and got patched up.
  • Top 10 most fun games you can play right now.
  • Top 10 most fun games you can play right now, mods allowed.
  • Repeat above lists for each "type" of gamer (explorer, creator, whatever else people come up with)
  • Top 10 most innovative games for their time.
  • Top 10 most innovative games for their time but with everything invented before Y2K taken as 'given' - because, if we don't, games from the 1970's and earlier dominate the list for having features like "graphics instead of text" and "ability to save your game."
  • Top 10 most fun games for you.
  • Top 10 most fun games for you in the past 5 years, so we can keep the rose-tinted glasses effect to a minimum.
Take your pick!

I've been playing too much Crimson Desert lately so I've finally decided to break up the routine a bit. I wanted to find a new game to play that would be quite different and give me a fresh experience. I settled on this game:

A few minutes in my ears and eyes began to bleed, but in such a glorious fashion that I had to keep playing. My headphones felt like they were about to blow out but the demons in the favela needed to be expunged. I had to save Brazil.

The level design is amongst the funniest thing I've experienced in any game before. I've made better maps than this on Garry's Mod 15 years ago, but that is the beauty of it. It's hard to decipher if the terrible geometry of these levels were intentional, unintentional, or just straight out of the mind of a complete lunatic. I love this game.

Hey everyone! 👋

I’ve been jumping between a few games this month and honestly, it’s been a great time for gaming. Recently I’ve been spending most of my time on open-world and story-driven games, but I still go back to multiplayer when I just want to relax and have fun.

What are you all playing right now? Anything you’d strongly recommend trying this month? I’m always looking for something new to get into, especially if it has a good story or unique gameplay.

Also curious — do you prefer sticking to one game at a time, or switching between a few like I do?
Unless I get obsessed with a game, I usually have multiple games going at once.

As for game recommendations, I'm not really playing anything with a narrative at the moment. I keep meaning to start a new CRPG playthrough, but haven't gotten around to it yet. I have yet to play the Divinity games, so that's probably where I'll go next.

Yeah, this guy gets X4...

They've got a beta test that is going over really well, so the game has been getting some good buzz of late.

Apparently I have this game in my Steam family library. Maybe I should give it a go, see if it runs well on my old PC.

Did you see Solasta 2 has released in Early Access?

Yeah, but I've stopped playing games with significant narratives in early access. Underwear Mender Simulator 2030? Sure, I'll play that in early access, but I don't want to be stuck in the middle of a story for who knows how long.

I saw a video earlier about Civ 7 and somehow the conversation led to how do you rate games. And in the bad category he put Mario 64 as it is just a game about jumping into paintings, and who asked for that? I smell a slop argument, its prior to 2005 so therefore its bad

Now in isolation, he may have a point. But it is overlooking one fact... it was the first successful 3d platformer. So yes, 30 years later when you have so many other games to choose from, its really not a game I would choose now... but just dismissing it as bad says more about the person saying it than the game itself.

I didn't enjoy game when it was released, but I know it has a place in history. N64 only had 2 games here on release, Mario and Pilot Wings... took 6 months for a new game. So you play those or you wait.

This is what happens when you spoiled for choice and didn't actually live through the time that the game you are criticising was made in.

Get off my lawn (lol)

Mario 64 is one of those rare cases where a 30-year-old video game still holds up and feels fresh today. A lot of games can be considered innovative for their time, but end up not standing the test of time, becoming outdated and archaic as it ages. Mario 64 still feels great to play, and much better to handle than a lot of 3D platforms that came after it, besides other Mario games. I still boot it up on emulator every once and a while, surprisingly it works well with modern controllers.

I lived through the N64 era and I still think the majority of those games were crap. People were fawning over Golden Eye, while I was already crushing people in Quake multiplayer.

That said, I did recently install the source port for Mario 64 on Android and...yeah...it's ok, I guess? I just finished the second level and I have to say the controls are by far the worst part of the game. I feel like I struggle to get Mario to do what I want him to on those little platforms because the camera is constantly spinning around and the angle I push the stick at has to change. It's not that big of a deal, but still somewhat obnoxious to fall off a platform repeatedly when it doesn't feel like a skill issue but a control issue.

And speaking of CRPGS @Zed Clampet; I just started playing Pillars of Eternity again, given they just released the turn based mode for it. Somehow I played 40-hours of that game and I remember almost nothing of it, aside from eventually getting a stronghold. But all the stuff I'm doing currently? Absolutely no memory.

At any rate, it's been fun and I'm enjoying it very much. I vastly prefer turn based mode to real time and the dialogue heavy nature of it doesn't feel as bad as Starfield to me, since not everything is voiced. It feels much more like reading a book than having to listen to someone drone on in three sentence snippets for several minutes.

Most were. Only dev that made any games I actually liked was Rare. I had 35 cartridges by time I stopped playing it. Not standing here saying Mario was amazing... I didn't play it much myself, I preferred racing games and most of those were crap. F Zero is the only one I would maybe play now, although high speed ships on tube like tracks isn't so unique anymore... though most new ones I have seen don't include you ramming other ships with yours.

it took 22 years to make a N64 game with no fog. They were of their time. They don't compare to newer games but we didn't have any other choices, so if you ignore all the games since 1999, then they are pretty good.

I play a good amount of Retro games and I pretty much skipped that whole era, because I was deep into PC (still am, really), but going back and trying contemporary systems, the PSX was just so much better. I've gone back and played through a good number of PSX games and very much enjoyed my time with them.

N64 on the other hand...I've liked a few here and there, but the performance of them often keeps me away. I get frustrated seeing 20FPS and lower on many of the original games. I'd love to play Rogue Squadron, but it just runs so slowly, I can't get through the first level.

Maybe I'm a bit too dismissive and harsh on it, but I've just never been impressed by the system, even back in the day. I'm sure I would have been happy if I had been gifted one, but even then, the games didn't feel comparable to me when we had stuff like Quake, C&C Red Alert, Unreal.

All that said, I do intend to setup N64 Emulation (maybe Gamecube, as well) on my tablet for when I travel next with my kids, if only so we can all have some local multiplayer stuff in a small package and I won't have to bring a whole ass laptop with me for them.

N64 was last console I had until about 2012 as I got my 1st PC in 1999 and ignored consoles until the PS3.

I played retro games at the time, I don't really feel need to play them now. I have a friend who invites me down the coast to play them all but I just don't have the attachment.

I probably wouldn't play them a ton if my lifestyle was different, honestly. I do like them and a lot of experiences still hold-up.

But I usually play them because they end-up being more mobile experiences. Since whatever device can run them doesn't really need much power, it's usually a thing I can fit in my pocket and play for a few minutes when I'm going to the toilet or taking a break to rest my busted knees. Something I can whip out on the couch, instead of looking at my phone and getting nothing out of it.

They just fit very well for where I'm at in my life at the moment, so they see a decent amount of playtime from me.

Still playing path of exile, still grinding away at challenges. we stand at 18/28 challenges.

i currently have 5 or 6 challenges more or less in the bag taking us to 25 or 26. I have my eye on some of the other challenges but the rest fall in the grindy, luck based or challenging. atm i'm at level 96 and i just want to eek out the last level of my character before playing the harder content. I doubt i'll finish it by end 2nd month unless i find ways to speed up my progress. Even now, i'm sort of doing multiple challenges at once but it takes a long time. For the scarab task i need to use up to 240 scarab. If i only insert 3 at a time this will mean i need to play 80 maps to completge THAT challenge and there is another challenge i need to grind 150 maps and i've only done a measily 27...

So whats the plan? i need to start playing originator content. But easier said then done as its challenging, but once i get to next level i'll take off the shakles and play the other content and forsake all the side content. yes, plenty of good rewards and valuables lost, but theres little choice in the matter.

@Colif @BeardyHat I much prefer turn-based as well, and my wife bought me an N64, and I liked it pretty well, but I wasn't much of a gamer then. I played sports games (including racing) and crpgs now and then. On the N64, I only really played Wave Racer, Goldeneye and Mario 64. There was a flying game I played a little. Not sure what that was.

Only other console that was actually mine (other than the original consoles like Atari and Colecovision, was the Sega Genesis. I think I played NHL and golf on that. After the first couple of consoles, I was pretty much primarily a PC gamer

Speaking of Mario and N64, I came across this article just this morning:

I may have to find some way of playing that again....
