Enderal Forgotten Stories Discussion

I'm going to start playing this free Skyrim mod available on Steam if anyone wants to play along.

The first thing I noticed was that there isn't going to be a lot of explanation, so here is some stuff I compiled using CoPilot that may be helpful.

CONTROLS

Core Movement & Interaction​

• Shift (hold) → Walk (slows you down)
• Caps Lock → Toggle walk/run
• Alt → Toggle autorun
• E → Interact / loot
• R → Ready/Sheathe weapon
• F → Torch on/off
• C → Sneak
• Z → Shout/Phasmalist summon (same key as Skyrim’s shout)

Inventory & UI​

• I → Inventory
• J → Journal / quests
• K → Magic menu
• P → Phasmalist menu (if you’re playing that class)

• B → Meditation (Enderal’s version of “level up”)

Combat Tricks Enderal Never Explains

Timed Blocks Are Ridiculously Strong
Blocking right as the enemy hits you triggers a stagger that interrupts almost anything.
Power Attacks Drain Stamina, But They Also Break Guards
If an enemy is blocking, a power attack will:
Sneak Attacks Are Skyrim-Level Broken
Even though Enderal rebalanced a lot, stealth is still:
Elemental Weaknesses Actually Matter
Unlike Skyrim, Enderal’s elemental system is tuned tighter:
Stagger Is Your Best Friend
Summons Are Tanks, Not DPS


Hidden Mechanics Enderal Never Explains

Entropy (Decay Magic)
Entropy is the “dark magic” school:
  • Damage-over-time
  • Armor-ignoring spells
  • Life drain
  • Summons (yes, entropy controls summoning)
Psionics
Psionics is Enderal’s mind-magic:

  • Fear
  • Frenzy
  • Calm
  • Charm
  • Illusion-based stealth boosts
Memory Trees
These are Enderal’s “classes,” but they’re more like:

  • Skill trees
  • Passive bonuses
  • Build-defining perks

You unlock them by meditating (B key).
The game never tells you that you can mix trees freely — hybrid builds are some of the strongest in the game.

Best Early‑Game Items You Can Grab Without Fighting



These are all “walk in, take stuff, walk out” finds.


The Abandoned Tower (near Riverville)


Contains:
  • A free backpack
  • A decent bow
  • A bunch of potions
  • A few skill books

No enemies unless you go deeper.

The Sun Coast Ruins

Several ruins around the starting area have:
  • Free armor
  • Free weapons
  • Free crafting mats
  • Zero enemies if you stick to the surface

Great for gearing up before the first real dungeon.


The Old Granary


A small ruin with:
  • A chest containing early-game enchanted gear
  • No enemies unless you poke the wrong corner

The Ark Marketplace

Vendors here sell:
  • Cheap skill books
  • Cheap backpacks
  • Cheap potions
You can loot a surprising amount just by exploring the upper floors of buildings.

The Apothecary in Riverville

Steal (or buy) these:
  • Mana potions
  • Health potions
  • Alchemy ingredients
 
One thing I've learned so far: this game is a bit more difficult than Skyrim and I wouldn't recommend increasing the difficulty to expert or higher from the start. I was unable to kill anything stronger than a crab without cheesing.

Also, stealth might be broken eventually, but just like in Skyrim that's probably only true after investing in it quite a bit. It's definitely not true at the start of the game.

Hell, I almost died in the ship (if that's even possible). I was expecting the melee to be painful, so I picked the magic race or whatever.
 
I picked the elf, too. Got through to meeting a guy by a fire that gave me a quest. At his camp was a book that went on FOREVER! New quest: read all the books by the Butcher of Ark. Yeah, I don't think so.

The odd thing was, the English in the book was fine. Not so with the game's help. Odd that a long story came out fine but the (relatively) short help wasn't translated so well.

P.P.S. Oh... deerstalker. Guess that's not quite the same.
 
I have given up on Enderal. I wasn't really feeling like playing more, but I decided to load up my save anyway, only for it to get stuck on the loading screen.

The game has had far too many game-breaking bugs in the short amount of time I've played and I've lost any interest in trying to make it work. Which is a shame, because the little bit I've seen looked very promising.
 
I agree with @Pifanjr that it's a bit buggy. I noticed weird sound effects (NPCs talking while sleeping) and large missing textures (very noticeable while swimming in the ocean), and had to use the command console at one point because my character got stuck inside a house. Climbing also seems kind of broken, at least I can't remember it being so difficult to climb in Skyrim and getting stuck everywhere.

Also had a fun bug where I was pickpocketing a prisoner from outside his locked cell, and he caught me and well....opened the locked door through sheer will 😆 Combat is also very buggy at times with enemies getting stuck in animation loops or just standing completely still for some reason.

I'm currently just exploring on my own, not taking anything to serious and to be honest, besides the bugs and such, it has been interesting enough to keep me exploring for a few hours. What I like the most so far is that a lot of the areas look quite different from each other, so it makes it a bit more interesting to run around and explore. The caves and such seems ok, had a couple of good encounters with mini bosses and some close encouners with me running like an idiot to the very end to hoard and run away full to the brim, all clanking around.

At least I am starting to look a bit better....

Oh good. I was starting to dread playing.

I'm not hitting as many bugs, but this is a 15 year old game with a player-made mod over the top. It's very well done, but even Skyrim, developed using FAR more man-hours, is getting pretty dated. (I'm afraid that business with climbing is in the original Skyrim. I remember you had to find a spot where you weren't sliding, then try to jump to a point and not slide again - or at least slide into a better spot.)

Skyrim is almost up to the point where being 'more modern' doesn't change a whole lot. I expect most of the games made in the past 8-or-so years will be perfectly fine to play even 8-or-so years from now.
 
I like the skill tree (memory tree) system and think I will be going for bow dmg and sneak and maybe some more mana so I can use more spells. I don't think I am going to be doing the main story, so going to make my own story as I go on my adventure. I have been stealing some stuff from nobility areas, so I might focus on breaking into rich people's houses and robbing them blind. Since I don't have much lockpicking skill, I need to find some more of those lock-breaking spells. I have not killed any innocent people, so I think I am going to stay on that moral road and mainly kill (or run around) in caves and dungeons looking for more loot.
