When you look at Legend of Zelda link to the past, and the first 2 or 3 tomb raiders, you notice that the world is immersive. Background noise, effects when you walk in water, etc.
So many of these "big awesome games" nowadays from what i see in online video shots,,, they dont have that. There is no AMBIENCE to them.
Yes is nice to have detail when you walk the space station blowing monsters away, but you want to have detail, noise, little things that make it immersive. Its why Gunman Chronicles was only a half loser, it had the ambience, but crappy game play.
