Did Arcades Bring About Their Own Demise?

My favorite arcade games were Galaga, Rampage and NBA Jam. Time Crisis 2 was also fun to play because you could use those plastic guns and I remember that was pretty cool as a kid. Pinball machines were also fun, but I was never any good with them. Mostly just closed my eyes and hoped for the best while watching the effects/animations events if I were lucky enough to get them.

That guy is playing Galaga! Didn't think we'd notice, but we did.

As a hard core arcade/pinball player back in the day it was the consoles that killed it in my area. That and they took down Fast Eddie's Arcade on the river front in Windsor.

Why play street fighter 2 at the store when we can just go to each others houses and play that, or NHL 92 to 94, Final Fantasy, Punch Out at home instead of the arcade.

Sure there was the 6 player Spider man game and such, but not many places had that and with multi tap for some systems ya had 4 player games, or 3.... just like some arcades.

Knights of the Round at home.... sign me up.

Whenever i went to london back in the 90s, i would go to the trocadero mainly funland and sega world. It was 5+ floors of arcades, pinball machines, rides, bumper cars and much much more . It was arcade gaming mecca for my 4 year old mind. Still blew my mind in the last years before it closed.

Up until 3d cards like 3dFX Voodoo, or consoles like the Dreamcast or PS1, arcades had the advantage when it came to graphics and performance. It's is no surprise they slowly went away when people could get that performance at home, while PCs and consoles also became much more common.

Sounds awesome. Eddie's was 3 floors I think, on the river front of the Detroit River looking at the RenCen, Joe Louis Arena. Was a dope place to be.
