Greetings community and welcome to Coconut Monkey Cornerclub!

This is the home for you to sit around the fireplace and enjoy a beverage of your choice while having a chat with the community.

Perhaps you managed to spill some water on your keyboard just while you were winning in Warzone. Maybe you are a bit sad about Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 losing key developers lately or perhaps you just want to say something that you don't really want to dedicate a whole thread too. Keep in mind the forum rules, engage with the community, and talk about what we love the most: Gaming, games, and anything in between.

Soon weekend, hope you all will have a good one! I'm going to be playing Wasteland 3 and finishing up on my lastest MFS 2020 journey. This time I will be visiting Dovre, a mountain range in Norway. Oh, I will also play a little Rainbow Six Siege as it got a free weekend up and my nephew is also playing it.

How about you, any gaming plans for the weekend?

How about you, any gaming plans for the weekend?

Yes, though mine are of the board and/or card variety. Probably playing some Terra Mystica or Iron Dragon.

Next week I have three days off work so my wife and I can finally catch up on house work and do some chores that have been ignored for a while. Once we're done with that it should be easier to find time to play video games again.

@Dakkon Wildstar, now that is a blast from the past. I remember jumping on a trial or maybe it was an open beta. I played through the first starter zone and from what I remember it was ok, but the hub quests were quite boring. I reckon that was one of the reasons I left the game.

I actually think difficulty and steep learning curve killed a lot of interest in a lot of people.
I was playing Stalker and in order to unlock the raid you needed to attune 40 people if I remember correctly.
Similar as it was in Vanilla WoW.
Dungeon runs would take 40-60min depending on the group, there was no daily quest except one zone that could be done in 20min...
I grew bored and stopped playing. But I still wish I could visit Nexus sometimes :(

So what do you think about new Nvidia cards guys? The biggest surprise for me is that RTX 3070 has only 8 GB of RAM. That makes me wonder how RTX 3060 will look like. If it'ill have only 6 GB of RAM then this will be a second generation in a row without any progress in memory quantity. If it'll have 8 GB RAM then this will make RTX 3070 quite unprofitable. Besides that, the prices are quite decent, especially for RTX 3070. However I have fear that the card will start to choke in the next generation titles because of memory quantity.

Performance claims very impressive, but the TDP (and pricing) on the 3080 and 3090 is high compared to normal (2080TI 250w 3090 350w). I'd be surprised if air cooled models of those cards aren't very loud this generation. I think there's only so much you can do with heat pipes and aluminum fins, no matter how much they might talk about fancy new designs. I'll believe it when I see a few decent reviews.

3070 obviously sounds like the best deal, but there are always those who will pay over the odds for the best, and fair enough if you can afford it.

Interesting point on the 8GB, in the past AMD cards have aged slightly sometimes better because of this. I think it might be noticeable in some games if you're on 4k and up. If youre like me and tend to upgrade every 2-3 years then I don't think its as much of a problem for a while, particularly lower than 4k, and in games that aren't Horizon Zero Dawn .

There is some talk of a 3070TI with 16GB, be interesting to see what the pricing might be on that, or if its going to be an OEM only model.

Waiting on AMD, hopefully they are going to be performance competitive and keep the pricing in check at the high end.

499USD for the 3070 sound like a real steal to me. I was actually looking at the 2080 TI, but since this card outpaces it, I would not mind getter better performance for less. I'm also not going to be running at 4K for a long, looooooong time, but perhaps upgrading to something just a tad sharper than my 1080p (2K maybe). I have been used to that resolution since HD started to be a thing, so might just be the right time to make some new investments.

I'm loving what I see with the new cards, particularly the price point compared to the 2000 series. I'm debating whether to hold out for the Ti series or just go straight for the 3090, I'll probably hold out. I'm just glad I didn't buy into the 2000 series, I had a feeling this generation would be better on the price front.

Since i'm kinda solving the problem myself, i'm not going to create a new thread for it. So i'll do a long post instead, TLDR: PC playing up, can't tell if its my Graphics card or Motherboard. Maybe both + CPU.

I'm hacked off that my PC is not working atm. It was working fine on monday night right up to the point i turned off the pc. Tuesday and its dead. No DVI signal. Did the usual basics like checking the cables and reseating a few things nothing.

Motherboard code suggests its a GPU issue. Ok lets test it by taking it out and booting up the machine. Does it go through? Nope, no POST either keyboard doesn't even light up. Still stuck on display issues error codes. Ok not good. Lets see if i can connect to onboard motherboard graphics... fail. same error.

Panic stations! Its possible something has fried or malfunctioned. Atm i'm hedging my bets and buying a second hand motherboard of the same make and going to flash the current motherboard. As soon as i find a usb stick of some sort...

But if its motherboard issues, i can expect a lot of pain and work. Cue rebuilding my machine and possible components fried as well (even if it doesn't mention it). I might as well build an all new bloody machine instead rather then rebuild the status quo. But it came at a bad time. I want the rtx 30 series stuff and thats going to cost an arm and a leg as will the I9 stuff.

woe is me.

Sounds to me like a motherboard or PSU issue, if you have another PSU lying around I'd give that a go and see if you get different results.

I only replaced the PSU less then a year ago. Previously the PSU had something rattling around and i suspect it had blown a capacitor as it would make a loud crack sound and the one i replaced it with hasn't.

Don't see any problems with the PSU especially when its 750 watt and have been using the same model for over 4 years. Might be worth looking but i don't have any spare PSUs sadly.

The motherboard and GPU are the main suspects for now. But if we have to replace that i would be livid. The whole PC cost me nearly 2k years ago. If i have to spend nearly 1k to get it back up and running, i might as well cut my losses and build a new one.

That will annoy me no end.

The new nVidia cards look like a game changer. It's not often Digital Foundry, Jayz Two Cents & Linus Tech Tips are all blown away by new tech. I wonder what sort of teething troubles there'll be with the early shipments—nV are putting a lot in there, it'll be a miracle if it all goes smoothly.

I'm definitely looking at a new 2021 build now!

Well, good news is that my PC is alive again. didn't need to buy anything and i'm still not entirely sure what solved the problem. I think it was a combination of reflashing my motherboard and reseating memory and everything else for good measure that got it mended again.

here's hoping it stays that way until i build my next machine!

But that said for those 4 days i was without a pc i was so empty. I seem to do everything my computer including studying etc. It kinda puts things into perspective. i might have a gaming/technology addiction. even if i can stop at the prescribed times (like dinner, bedtime, work etc), i kinda feel lost/bored or empty when i'm not on my PC. Perhaps its because i had nothing to do except rack my brains trying to fix the issue and worrying about my beloved pc.

I'm pretty confident that investing in a new computer with the RTX 3070 will a good choice *looks in Cyberpunk 2077 direction* AMD got a lot of work to do to change my mind.
You sure you don't want a 3080? The memory has an X at the end. Not an 'a', not an 'i', an actual, upper-case X. Micron isn't just screwing around!

As for AMD, you might need to talk to them about the CPU.

Books! That's what we all did back in days of yore. The physical books work perfectly well with 0 electricity - at least until the sun goes down. Plus, they're crazy cheap.

I think that with 3 or 4 fans the cards shouldn't be too loud. Air cooling is quite effective and sufficient these days. Although I'm a little worried how it will be in the more budget cards which won't have 3 fans.

3070 obviously sounds like the best deal, but there are always those who will pay over the odds for the best, and fair enough if you can afford it.

It does sound like the best deal, but this 8 GB RAM... I'll wait for RTX 3060 and see what Nvidia has to offer in the mid-range segment.

I suspect this will be a problem. I don't know how much the hardware requirements will go up, when the next generation launches, but I expect a noticeable increase in GPU memory requirements.

That would be a little overkill for me. 12 GB would be enough for a card like RTX 3070. Time will tell whether we'll see a card like this.

If you're not planning on switching to 4K then 2080 Ti might be too much. The problem with 3070 is its memory. There are already games which can consume more than 8 GB RAM (RE3 Remake for example) and I expect those to be more frequent after the next generation fully launches.

Besides drawing and video games, reading books were my thing as well. Go to the library every weekend and grab a book. My stuff was horrible histories, TinTin, wheres wally (wheres waldo for the US), asterix, Steve jacksons/ian livingstones Fighting Fantasy books, choose your own adventure, graphic novels etc.

These days i just get ebooks and read them at night to wind down. Part of the problem is that they aren't cheap and i only read them these days before going to bed. Spend too long reading books and i get eye strain.

Would do boardgames if i had the time, space, money or friends to play them. Theres TV but i don't watch that much these days. Most of it is terrible and i seem to watch repeats more and more often (like QI).

But its all in the past now, my PC is back. I suspect that the problem was linked to the cmos battery givingup the ghost, caused some sort of settings issue that killed it somehow. That was the last problem i had this morning and replacing it seems to have solved it.

@Sarafan Whats loud is subjective, my last three have all been too loud for me really. I try and buy the quieter tested models even if they cost more. They just slapped about a third more heat on top! The top level Titans and xxx80/TI's havent ever exceeded 250W TDP, until now. It's unprecedented. Unless for some reason theyre changing the way they're measuring TDP the generation.

If Nvidia has come up with some voodoo to make their founders edition cooler somehow work better with a smaller/similar footprint I'll be very impressed, and happy. Its just that no other PC heatsink specialists have been able to come up with anything significantly better that wasn't just marketing talk in probably 10 years, or more.

EDIT: I just checked out the Digital Foundry vid and theyre saying anecdotally the 3080 is quieter than the 20xx funder editions. That IS impressive.

Going to put my 1080 on ebay tomorrow. Got my eye on a 3080. But it means 2 weeks without a dedicated gfx card. I saw that the availability date is Sept 17th, does anyone know if the cards will ship that date or if preorders are available then?

Seems a bit ambiguous to me.

@Alm My local store here is saying that they 'aim to get them' on that date. Whatever that means.

It depends on the supplier and where you are in the world, but I think they should be available on that date in theory. If they don't sell out. It doesnt look like pre orders are available yet though, or if there will even be pre orders..

I'm not sure whether that post was any less ambiguous, but it was something.
