Yeah, everything wants an account or a card now a days. Even our supermarket wants your loyalty card if you go to buy even just 1 item. Why everyone is going into that direction I have no idea. LMAO that is my wifes department. If I need a card of any form (Except my bank card) then I ask her, and she gives me one to use. Her wallet has too many cards in them if you ask me but seems to keep her happy.

I prefer using a Cafe to buy odds n ends to going to a bigger shop. At the cafe's you do not need additional cards you just pay and go.

Bought water tonight that I have to buy at the bigger shops and yes had to walk back to the car to get the card from the wife waiting for me in the car, then returned and paid for my 20 litres of water.....in cash.

Well, the cooktop was a pretty huge job considering the counter cutting. But I got it in today and one of the mounting brackets immediately fell off, so my wife put in some 2x4 blocks as mounts underneath and then I added some shims to make sure everything was good. It's a bit of a hack job, but honestly I feel better about it than some mounts that are attached with liquid nails.

Also, I've already broken my 3d printer. I didn't read the instructions for changing filament, it clogged and then I broke the hot end trying to clear it. But Amazon has a new, hardened steel one coming tomorrow, so at least there's that. Still I wanted to play with my new toy tonight, oh well.

Lastly, I'm going to start seriously looking for work finally. It's been almost 8 years since I last had a job (my own business not withstanding), but my wife's work just started offering voluntary severance packages, since things have taken a turn and they can no longer rely on Medicare and Medicaid contracts from the government... Who can say why, really...

Anyway, she's anxious about it, but isn't going to take the package and is pretty sure she won't be laid off next year, but I'll start a serious job search here. I'm unlikely to make as much money as she does and I've been out of the SysAdmin game for awhile, so here's to hoping.

Not much to see! Just a basic black cooktop.

Actually haven't even used it yet, aside from testing out cooking some tortillas in that pan there. My wife actually wanted to go out to eat tonight, which I would normally relish; not having to cook is usually a relief, but at this point I haven't cooked since...uhhh. I mean, I made chili in the instant pot Monday, but that was the only thing I actually made since last Wednesday. We've just been eating leftovers and last night I made frozen pizza.

Anyway, I'm getting long winded as usual. The point is, I would normally love to go out to eat, but I haven't even used the new cooktop yet, so I asked her if we could just eat at home... I've got some steaks ready to make steak tacos (though I might grill those, hmmm...) and then I'll need the stove top to make refried beans, tortillas and fajita style veggies. I'm excited to actually use it for real, though as i understand it there's a learning curve to induction stoves, so we'll see how things turn out.

I applied to three jobs today. Gotta say, I don't particularly want to work, as I enjoy staying home and taking care of all the house business, as well as the random other things that need to be done. I think even if I get an interview, I'll probably end-up doing it poorly, as my Sys Admin skills are rusty, so we'll see what happens. Also think I'm going to have to give-up a hobby or two if I get a job.

Lastly, made an attempt at fixing my car again today. Been having this issue with my van where the charging system has been having intermittent issues; I've cleaned the battery connectors, cleaned the crimps on them, cleaned a ground and finally replaced the battery altogether (it only had about 60% of its life left, so it was due anyway), then drove around almost 20-miles for 35 minutes and cranked every electrical system I could think of. My battery voltage stayed on the low side of normal, occasionally jumping when the alternator got some more juice through the throttle. No battery light, but I still don't think I've solved the issue. I suspect either the alternator might be shot (only 3-years old though) or I have a stiff pulley somewhere on the front of the engine causing issues. But I'm just going to keep an eye on it for now and see what happens, because I'm tired of tearing into this car.

Seriously though, if that's infrared you gonna love it. A friend gave me her old Flavor Wave IR oven she never used as a parting gift when I moved to another location. I've found it to be the absolute best way to cook fish n chips, and many other things. I hardly use my big oven anymore unless I'm cooking pizza. The oven that replaced the Flavor Wave has a heating element in the bottom so it can cook pizza, but it's harder to clean and doesn't last as long as the old ones.

Nice install btw, Whirlpool is a great brand. As for the aesthetics, you should only care about what's visible above, not below.

Oops, after reading your post I realize I forgot the latest cooktops are Induction, not IR. I know you need pans with ferrite in them for those, and they are safer to the touch, so great if you have little ones around, but I wonder what their lifespan is compared to IR?

Did some checking and found Induction cooktops last about 10,000 hrs (10 yrs), and IR elements last about 20,000 hrs (20 yrs). You add that to the fact that Induction is more expensive, and it's quite a bit more cost overall.

That sounds pretty obnoxious about yours cycling. I hope mine doesn't do that, because I do a lot of that kind of thing, so it would be super inconvenient. But this one was cheap anyway, we got it at an outlet store for $504 out the door, because it has a scratch or something I can't even see. It's originally $1000 at the regular non-outlet, so if it sucks we'll replace it sooner than later. Thankfully with the expanded countertop, we'll have plenty of options to choose from if that happens.

I dont give my phone, i just buy what i was and drop cash. i also shop local 95% of the time. If i can buy a product from a single operator store or crafter, or producer i do it. Sure i buy coke and Levi's, and watch tv and such, but i go out of my way to shop local and single owner shops producing their own goods. I goto walmart and get papper towels and tooth paste, but id say 80% of my monthly living money spent is not on a corperation.

Ill tell you its harder than you think, but its worth it to me. The service alone is so far beyond. I dont live in a small town, but luckily, enough people support local, that we have so many options. It also helps so many surroundind towns keep out corporations. The towns larger than 20k cant for legal reasons, but we have a good 100 in an hour drive that dont have to comply.

I guess im spoiled though as i have big citys just 1 1/2 hours from me and smallers a lot closer, but lots of tiny towns too. Like i can goto local theater in a 100 seat venue, or go hit a 75k seat stadium, not everyone has that option

We pretty much support the same kind of people. Just the small shop or single operators do not have good drinking water so have to get that from the larger retail stores.

I am also in a very small town, closest major city to me is about 260km in anyone of the four directions. Advantages to this is we can buy meat and vegetables directly from the farmers at good prices. I do have a borehole on the farm but the water is not drinking quality. The towns water (Government water) is not tasting well so we mainly use that for cooking so drinking water (Safe to humanly consume) we buy. I buy about 60L of water a week. The cattle gets their water from the borehole but I run it through some filters beforehand.

Still leaves us with some odds n ends that needs to be bought from the larger retailers hence the wife has the cards for them. Not actually sure how it works but do know that they ask me for a card every time. I am not a guy for shopping. If I do shop I do it from my PC and it gets delivered. LMAO, the wife is more the one for town shopping. Me, if I see the town more than once a week then it has been a bad week for me.

LMAO, sounds like my house, think the sandwich press is the most used appliance in our house with the oven coming in on second at once a week. Not counting the kettle since that is a necessity not an appliance.

Yeah sounds like an Alternator problem that. Have you checked if you can just do the diode plate? But before you check the diode plate, check the ignition lug on your alternator. (Small thin wire). Heard that if that lug is not making proper contact, your alternator will work intermittently. Personally have not had a problem like that before.

Induction tops are great. Learning curve is fairly easy to remember. As long as it has a metal item on the "element" it will heat up and get to the temperature you need it to be. It is also faster than a gas top. So if you add oil to a pan, have everything prepared before switching on the top else it will scorch whatever you throw in the pan or pot.

I have a single induction top that I hardly use. We switched over to gas about 3 years ago when we had the major electric problems in our country. Must add we hardly use that either. Just me and the wife so toasted bread etc is the fastest and easiest solution for us. Almost no longer need to start up anything else unless we decide on a cooked meal of some sort (maybe once a week)

Not any metal though, has to be magnetic, which is why I said it needs ferrite in it. Cast iron and stainless steel are the two most common types of pots and pans used with induction. From what I've read though, the stainless needs to be of a certain grade.

Your induction cooktop looks a lot fancier than mine, but I got mine for free from my brother. He cracked the glass plate and was going to throw it away, but offered it to us because we were moving and didn't have a cooktop yet.
