Apart from moving settings around... took me 20 years to realise New versions of windows just change the desktop. They might add a few features but those features may never actually be useful.
They used to change a lot more just like games used to change a lot more. Then, for a long time, it was mostly DirectX versions that drove gamers to a new OS. The technologies aren't advancing fast now, though, so there's not much point. (Maybe that's a big reason why Microsoft is so much more interested in AI than a virtual monopoly on operating systems? Even a monopoly has to compete with itself - and when you can't come up with anything new, well...)

Windows 11 does have one big thing for me as a programmer: much better support for gRPC. I don't like REST much, but gRPC looks really good. Windows 11 supports it much better than Windows 10. Could be quite useful at work now that we're getting everybody on 11. Not much use at all at home.

Have not found anything with regards to defender yet, but hopefully this version can finally switch off defender completely. Well, defender and a few other things.
Wait, what!? We need Defender! We need it bad!!

I had forgotten about the android integration... shows how much I use it. That was MS attempting to be somewhat relevant in the age of Mobile phones... so is AI. AI is probably seen as a new meaning for company as Windows just doesn't excite people any more.

Defender isn't going anywhere, unless they create something else to replace it. Windows without a Firewall or Anti virus would be dead in a day. I don't mean all installs would be but it would be just like running XP used to be without AV, but 1000x worse.

He coming from the position of someone with 4gb of ram. People with restricted systems see Microsoft processes as things to be stopped, rather than just ignored. I have helped people in the past in his position... i think from memory he can't put any more in.

Can add RAM, just too expensive.

By using another AV and having an external FW, means defender is just taking up space.

Yes, I do stop some services. Things I do not use, like I do not print so do not need print spooler, I have software for databases so do not need drive indexing and this list pretty much goes on.

If I do not need it, why keep it running?

Speaking of which, you would actually be the right person with advice on something. When running Cubase I can open maybe 4 or 5 external instruments then My RAM is full. Is there a way to have the instruments stored to my SSD temporary so that I can use more instruments? Maybe via a pagefile? E.g. load instrument to the temp file but using the ram for playback? even if there is latency, would be for editing purposes only so do not mind a big latency.

I can open maybe 2 Athera instruments and maybe add another 2 or 3 Prometheus instruments then my RAM is pretty much overloaded. Is there a possible setting to help this even just by a few?

Defender shouldn't be running if you have another AV installed... there might be some parts of it that runs but the main part of it isn't running at all on mine - I use Malwarebytes.
Y9Wm0y4.jpeg

I do use its firewall though. Doesn't seem to use many resources.

The page file question - I don't believe so. windows manages memory management. It would have to be a function of the program.

Really, you need to buy more ram. Its way faster for the PC to process the operations if they are in ram and not swapped out to the ssd.
Ram is way faster than ssd are. Your work might be over faster... could also load more instruments that way as well.

Windows should use a page file by default, but it's a lot slower than RAM. So if the issue is that Athera slows down when you add too many instruments, that's probably because Windows is already using a page file to store some of the memory.

Also, on Malware Bytes with the occasional extra scan with ESET online. But Defender is still using more than Malwarebytes does if I compare resources. At one point Defender stopped but then somewhere restarted again. So, I am pretty much running two AV's at the same time now with Defender using the bulk of the resources.

HAHAHA, on my "to do" list.

End of this month I need to replace my speakers (Monitors). Last week heard a "scratchy" noise and found that the speakers tore away from the "rubbery" part around the outside. For now, they are held together with nail polish just to get the workload done.

RAM.......will have to wait another month.

Way too much reading material for a Monday Morning (LMAO) but went through it.

Pretty much everything I knew about it but reading through it again just made me double the page file in size. According to most (and the forum confirmed) windows and the application should be ok and manage the memory on their own. I upped the Pagefile to min32GB now. Will see if it allows me to add more instruments or not.

Also not sure if running the application as "ADMIN" would have an effect on how it handles the memory usage.

Trial and error I guess

I know enough to be dangerous about Windows memory management, I used to try to figure out memory leaks in drivers... or at least, identify which drivers were causing them.

11forum link - more a how to set up page file Guide. Guess that is only way you can affect virtual memory - besides adding more ram.

There are programs that free it up but that just gives windows more work, as if the ram is free, its really not helping anyone... and freeing it up means windows needs to reload the data when its wanted again, and that is slower than just leaving it in ram to begin with. Windows is more likely to compress the information in ram rather than write it to page file.

Empty ram is wasted ram... it isn't doing anything. And yet, people like having it and think windows using it all is a bad thing... no, its ideal. People fight to keep it empty, Misunderstanding how windows juggles memory
whistles...

w4peRTX.jpeg

Knowing its a waste doesn't stop me having it. Hardly my fault windows doesn't have a use for all of it. I used to use some of it for Virtual Machines, or at least, I did on my last PC. I had thought I needed 64gb but that was a misunderstanding based on how much I let load at startup.

Page File: mine is auto managed, for some reason its set to 32gb. It is a left over from problems I had making PC. If storage was a concern, I would shrink it but I don't feel need to do anything about it with 1.57tb free on C still. It should shrink itself over time.

I wonder how much memory you actually use. In 2015 I went from using a PC with 4gb of ram, mainly as it only had 32bit windows and it couldn't access any more; to a PC with 16gb of ram and found I was using about 8gb of ram on it. Now I know windows grows into the space provided, but its likely I too was living off page file before I swapped.
The PC with 4gb of ram was also on HDD, I had been wondering why it was constantly running out of space... I have since worked out it was the page file trying to cope with me.

Windows 10 can start a PC with only 256mb of ram... notice I didn't say run... it walks it. You can't do anything with it at this level. Beats other older versions of windows though... not sure about 11. He didn't redo tests since:

Actually, a very informative video. When the page file explanation started, I hit the subscribe button. Information that I assume was not supposed to be in there but was explained in a language and in such a way that I (the technologically impaired one) understood.

LMAO and the Dell laptop........I had something similar to that years ago. (Think mine was a Compaq) Cannot remember what the little joystick (mouse control) was called but made life a breeze. Instead of dragging all over the track pad you just used that little joystick. LMAO. Loads of old memories that came from that video. LMAO

This is a fairly easy page to follow. Not that many technical terms on it... amazing really considering who its from

Windows tells every program that runs that it has access to 2tb of ram... even if you don't have it. It then allocates virtual pages to the program and swaps them in and out when needed. Memory management is more complicated than most people think. I know I don't understand it :D

Page faults are normal operations of windows, people just see fault and think its an error.
Page faults happen when CPU doesn't have info in its cache and has to get it from ram
A hard page fault is when windows cannot recover the info from ram and has to access page file/storage.

I would hate to see number of hard page faults on your pc. You can see by looking on Resource Monitor under memory

qn3UXt1.jpeg

Oddly my two charts don't agree. Left shows none, right says constant 100. Make mine up windows.

Blue squiggle on CPU seems to be part of windows total lack of understanding how modern CPU work. Task manager thinks my CPU running at 4.5ghz all the time, when it reality its probably mostly asleep.

Other topic: only 8 questions left on my course. I did 12 questions this morning so no need to look again today. I was feeling sad reading this weeks lesson as I don't really want it to end... i like doing courses.

I got a .net update after updating to 25H2 and it seemingly reset my default browser and first thing Firefox asked to do on start is be set default, and I hadn't changed it.

Today I removed my cook top:

Unfortunately, discovered that the hole is a mere 1/2 inch too small for the new stove. We considered our options and it looks like no matter what we buy, it's going to just be not quite right. So since we got an excellent deal on this new cooktop, we're going to enlist the help of my brother in law to enlarge the hole maybe an inch total, so we don't have this issue in the future.

I also ended up at Microcenter today. The plan was to buy a $10 build plate for my Ender 3, which I noticed the other day has a bent one. But thinking about it, I've spent a lot of time tinkering with this Ender 3 and while I'm happy I've got it working, it's taken a lot of effort to dial in and still isn't quite there yet.

So I ultimately walked out with a $360 new 3d printer. It stretched the hell out of my budget and I spent the remaining money I had in my bank account, but according to the salesman and people online, it should just work out of the box without issue. I haven't had a chance to even take it out of the box yet and probably won't until Wednesday at the earliest, but I'm eager to get it cranking and see what I can do with it. My wife also has some projects she'd like me to print for her, so it'll be awesome if I can just get the thing moving as soon as I unpack it.

See now that is how everything needs to be explained. Why use high techy terms if you can just call a something a squiggly thing and then why CPU if it is simply just the thing that keeps your PC warm and snuggly......some techy terms just do not make sense.

LMAO.

If I recall, it's your last week? Still so not know what course you are doing (Do not recall you mentioning what course it is unless I missed it).

Almost done then you can play games again. Pathfinder is waiting for me patiently. Hopefully it will be like riding a bicycle because half of the things I cannot remember anymore. Getting into the lore side was a mission on its own, hopefully it got stuck somewhere in my head and I remember it when I restart.

I had about 4 or 5 updates since my Upgrade to 25h2. One thing that I did like was that it gave me the new EUFI bios for my system via a firmware update. Just wish they would make a mistake and let me update to an unlocked BIOS. The rest was pretty much defender and Cumulative.

Yeah someday someone will explain to me why things cannot just be according to industry standards. E.g. a dustbin is X by X by X. No need to worry about the bag size you are buying since one size means you just need to decide on a brand.

Bit of an expensive round to open that space. Lots of water and a diamond cutting blade. and a lot of masking tape. If possible, let him open the "hole" outside" the house. Granite and marble dust goes in everywhere and once it gets wet it becomes mud and stuck. So makes cleaning afterwards very hard since instead of being wiped up it simply spreads out.

WHOOOOOoooooo new toys!!!!!! Did you get same bed size? What brand did you get? I am considering upgrading next year. Learned the hard way that a 100x100 bed is just not worth the effort. Will keep it just for small things but will look at a 250x250 next year. Saw some nice ones with built in 3d scanners. Did not get great reviews (the ones I saw) but there might be something good out there with a built-in scanner I can use.

Added, Colif will be suggesting to get more RAM for my computer before getting a new 3d Printer and would probably be what I would be doing. With everything that happened recently + the 25h2 update, upgrading the RAM seems to have become a more urgent thing to concentrate on.

Unfortunately, we're probably going to have to cut in place here. We're well aware of the dust factor, but hoping we can mitigate with some plastic sheets and water... we'll see... we don't have a lot of choice, unfortunately. If I don't have a stove tonight, I'm going to try and cook on my grill instead, but that's not going to be sustainable for the long term.

I picked up the Elegoo Centuari Carbon. It has a decently large build plate, bigger than my Ender 3, which also can't use the full plate anyway for whatever reason, so I'm excited to get it going. I'm hoping to print a whole European city for my games, though that'll be a lot of painting...

I have kingmaker though when i lauched it a few years back i quit after 5 mins not wanting to learn a new system

I had the same issue with pilliars,
and tryanny. Its funny how some complex games i just get and click and others for what ever reason just seam so bizzare. Maybe ill give it a try agian, kingmaker does seam like something id like. Still i want to replay baldurs gate, so maybe I'll just do that.

First i should install my new ssd and install the os, maybe upgrade to win 11. I was considering just paying yhe 35 bu ks to extend win 10, but it wantedme to make and link a ms acount and i just dont want to. I dunno why every bloody thing needs a flippin acount!

You cant even goto a fast food drive through with out them asking you to use an acount. Its getting absolutely rediculous!

@BeardyHat speaking of painting

I just bought a ceramic dragon at a ren faire this past weekend. Its pretty cool. I dunno if your into them but if so check out k&c ceramics and check out the fantasy section. There is a really cool dragon with a female warrior that i think i might have to get too.

After understanding the new system, I found the game actually more enjoyable. Never did the management (They had a different name for it where you control the world/forts/armies). Eventually switched it off but think with having a bit of knowledge on the lore side of things on my next round, I might be able to spend some time on figuring out the management side of things.

Yeah, some games just stay alien. LMAO my case was the original Myst. All my friends played and raved about it. Me........well I usually died not far from starting. Can add the Original Another world to that list as well. I used to die not long after going thru the window.

Yeah, everything wants an account or a card now a days. Even our supermarket wants your loyalty card if you go to buy even just 1 item. Why everyone is going into that direction I have no idea. LMAO that is my wifes department. If I need a card of any form (Except my bank card) then I ask her, and she gives me one to use. Her wallet has too many cards in them if you ask me but seems to keep her happy.

Hope you come right with it. I usually cut with a diamond blade, lots of water and outside when I do granite or marble. The water keeps it cold so that the slab do not overheat and shatter or crack.

Elegoo, do not know it but looked at the site you posted. 256x256 is a nice bed size. Something I am not able to try (Due to small bed size) is if it is possible to print 2 items at the same time. E.g. in your case say two different buildings. I know it will print them 1 x 1, but then you can load your program and let it print for say the whole night and next morning it is all done. But on mine it is one at a time kind of thing. From what I saw on the website looks like a neat 3d Printer. Almost looks like the one I saw that has a 3d scanner built in.

Cert 3 in Cybersecurity - I don't really want it to end as I like doing courses, it gives me something to do... and I learn new things. Sometimes. I knew a lot of what course covered already. Need to spend rest of week finishing it off now.

Have to do a video, I thought I had done them all. Lucky I found out on Monday and have all week to do it...

Not in a rush to play games, haven't really thought about it. Need to work out how some of the ones I have bought actually work.

My grandfather used to tell me "They can take anything from you, your house, your car, your money and even your life. But they will never be able to take your knowledge"

I must admit I have a learning problem as well. Might sound odd and dumb but I have hundreds of books on chords and progressions and notations etc. If it is music creation related, I tend to sign up for the course.

Cybersecurity sounds like something like anti-virus (That is if my mental translation is not failing me)
Have to do a video, I thought I had done them all. Lucky I found out on Monday and have all week to do it...

I have been following a few things you said about your course and must say that it sounds very involved. LMAO over here we do not get certificates to say we passed, we get certificates saying we attended which roughly means no one really cares if you know what was said and done since they have your money and why should they involve you into the study any further. Sad but unfortunately how things are done this side.
Not in a rush to play games, haven't really thought about it. Need to work out how some of the ones I have bought actually work.

You have more strength (Think is the correct term) in you that I do. Tried skipping games for a bit (Now with my busy time), lasted 2 days. Caught myself playing solitaire every now and then and then it moved to my usuals.
it doesn't bother me if you don't but it would make PC feel faster in general as you not running on the ssd.

Do have a ssd but not a nvme. I have a samsung 850 evo 500GB. After posting that earlier looked at the prices and seems as if I will be able to 16Gb RAM and a 1TB nvme for about R1400. If things do not go wrong (Murphy and the gang) then will be able to do it after getting new speakers. Looking at a set of PreSonus Eris 2nd Gen monitors. Found a good deal for a pair of them at a local store. Hopefully they will still be there end of the month.

i have both.
2 x Samsung 990 Pro capable of up to 7500mb/s
1 x Samsung 870 Evo that runs at 550 mb/s

Get the nvme, its faster than an ssd by a long margin even if its pcie 3
  1. PCIe 3 run at up to 3500
  2. PCIe4 run up to 7500
  3. PCIe 5 run up to 14000 but I know your board can't run those at full speed ... mine can but I chose not to as really you can't tell difference once they get so fast.
Load times don't improve a lot once you go past PCIe 4 depending on file sizes. If you only use it for windows, you don't need 5.

I have 1 Nvme slot. I would assume PCie 3 since most of my add-ons are PCIe 3.

I have been looking at the Nvme's for a while now. Honestly worried I am going to buy something I cannot use. Figured since I have a 500Gb Ssd now I should get next size up on the Nvme which will be the 1TB.

SO question. My Samsung Evo850 does 6GB/s (benchmarked and tested by Samsung magician) Must say I have no problems with my Ssd just a bit small. What would an Nvme give me. See you are saying 3k in your message but that makes it slower than my Ssd. Or I am reading your reply wrong. LMAO which is very likely.

To put it into perspective, the performance limit of the SATA III bus is 6Gb/s, meaning a SATA SSD can offer a max of 550MB/s of throughput after overhead.
A single PCIe 3.0 lane can offer 1GB/s (bidirectional) of throughput, so a PCIe 3x4 SSD can reach a throughput of up to 4GB/s read/write.
That goes up to 8GB/s (bidirectional) for PCIe Gen 4X4 SSDs.

So it doubles per gen. Gen 5x4 can actually do 15+gb/s compared to your actual max of 550mb/s

There is always overhead so you can't get the max.

4tb SATA ssd
4YbPYqv.jpeg

VS 4tb PCie 4 M.2
etPqCBF.jpeg

A PCIe nvme is always faster than SATA. they use different connection methods, sata was made for hdd that couldn't even hit 550mb/s. PCIe talks direct to CPU and has more lanes on motherboard to talk to it at same time.

PCIe 5.0 (the current version) offers up to 32 lanes and can, in theory, transfer data at up to 64,000MB/s compared to the 600MB/s specification limit of SATA III.

Technically they are M.2 drives but everyone knows them as NVMe which is just a communication protocol. Even I do it...
You won't find many sata m.2 anymore. They were a stop gap.

In most cases, you don't need to worry if the nvme will work as they all backwards compatible, it will only run as fast as motherboard supports though. Does help to check what motherboard can take. I think most do nvme but it is smart to check first.

I used to do that... when I had a role here apart from watching. When I trusted my AV to protect me. Now I don't look at them as much.

Most of the spammers links get stripped before they post anyway, so any that remain are either not on the filter or seen as safe. Proactive filters at posting stage mean we don't see any of the posts now... unlike 2020. Remember then?
