I checked properties on My Computer in File Explorer and it just sat there. Eventually, Windows killed it. Event Viewer has:
The program SystemSettings.exe version 10.0.26100.4652 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed.

I updated as soon as the install finished but just got a security update. I had to reboot because the command prompt was taking a long time to start up, but now I can't get into any Settings system!?

Edit: Completely shut down my PC and started it up again. That fixed it. Windows version is 24H2. Windows Update isn't interested in giving me anything newer.

Ugh, every time I boot up it says I need to turn on the firewall. Gotta mess with that next.
Just switch off the firewall notifications in firewall settings. I use my router firewall, have windows firewall switched off as well.

Yeah, I had a cumulative update two days ago and the usual defender update but no Win11 25h2 yet. Apparently, it is out but being rolled out bit by bit to supported systems. Still do not know if my system is supported.

You would think they would want it out there and ready as the wave of holdouts updates to Win 11.

The Firewall thing was nasty! I tracked down in Event Viewer that the system was trying to start it and getting a 'bad parameter' error. There isn't a lot of help on that. There's one guy saying here's a whole hive of registry values to put in, do these and all will be well. Hmm. I made a restore point and... chickened out. If it was text and I could see exactly what was being switched, then I might risk it, but changing a lot of registry information blind? Yeah, the batch file does back up the hives it's changing, but that's too much.

Let's try doing a restore. Surely Windows made one after installing, right? I restarted with shift pressed and went to look. Uhhh, no, but when I first started Windows 11 it complained about a driver for the lights in my case. When I tried to uninstall that (which didn't work) it made a restore point. The only other one is the one I just made before chickening out, there aren't any from Windows 10 days.

OK, so I did the earliest restore point, Windows started up, and it complained about the case lights driver again. Perfect, just as it should be doing. Check the Windows Defender Firewall service and... stuck in "stopping" state. It must have been screwed up right away. Ar.... wait, why is my desktop so clean? OMG, almost all the files and shortcuts are gone, including some very important ones! OK, I saved the most important ones out in cloud storage and... the password the browser has saved is wrong!? What the frakkin'... <MUCH cussing >

Wait, my restore point before chickening out!! Do restores wipe out newer restore points??? Shift-restart and... no they don't! This restore didn't help the firewall issue anyway, let's restore back to the chicken! That worked. Blood pressure restored. Temporarily.

Finally, I exported my registry (twice), cranked my blood pressure back up, and tried the registry hives. Reboot and they worked! If this was an evil hacker, he's also the only person who knows how to fix this issue. Still, I quickly followed up by telling Windows to reset all firewall settings. I'll have to give a few programs permission to go through the firewall again, but no biggy. I was even able to start Elden Ring and its 'easy anti-cheat' with no issue.

P.S. And I just made another restore point.

P.P.S. I swear I can hear Brian saying something about disk image backups....

P.P.P.S. Web blog with the hive, on the off chance anyone else hits this: https://www.winhelponline.com/blog/windows-firewall-error-0x6d9-no-endpoints/

Yesterday, I was lying in bed, wondering about the weird stuff AI could be used for. I was thinking about that someone (maybe already has) will make some AI module that makes it possible to feed it a picture of deceased relatives/friends and feed it info about everything you know about the person. Then you could have a talk with someone who looks exactly like him/her and go down the memory lane.

Then I was thinking about hypnosis and that, huh, what about actually using AI to recreate past traumas and with the help of professionals, really dig into the root of the problems. Perhaps having some of the bad people talk to you and say they are sorry, etc., and through that being able to rewrite your brain.

Then I was thinking about when (not if) something like this happens, just how much will this hurt/help our brains? Like if you start to engage with a new relationship with a friend who is no longer with you, how deeply would something like that affect a person's mental state. What kind of new traumas would arise because of that? Kind of scary stuff!

This is the plot of a (12-year old) Black Mirror episode:

AI is going to mess with so many people..

talk to the dead: https://www.bbc.com/reel/video/p0lhls9s/how-griefbots-allow-people-to-talk-to-the-dead-
Death is a natural part of life, keeping people "alive" via AI is just a cruel trap and an illusion unless we start doing brain dumps

AI Girlfriends: https://infatuated.ai/ << thats real btw

Colif creates an AI Zed Clampet so he stops logging in expecting to have him changed his mind and come back... I was starting to think my behaviour reminds me of when Brian left.

Here I was thinking I was the smartest one in the whole universe, and then @Colif SLAMS me with the hard-boiled truth + @Pifanjr Black Mirror "Be Right Back" episode.

AI Girlfriend, I mean, what could go wrong? At least it is safe sex?

Police: "Is your name George?"
Me: "Yes"
Police" You are under arrest for engaging in unlawful acts against AI women at a bar."
Me: Ahhhh, you mean Chantell?
Police: "Sir, she did not approve of having to drink 50 beers while you danced with her!"
Me. Duuuude, it's an AI, chill out!
Police: "Tell that to the judge!"
Me: Wait, this is an AI program, right?
Police: "Don't drop the soap"

If its a memory dump and the person talking to it knows the "person" talking to them is not actually alive and is only a memory dump, then it could work.

I just see traps. I would have a mandatory period between their demise and you being able to talk to them. And maybe restrict access and the amount of time you can spend "talking" to them. Not sure if we need a moderator inbetween and maybe a filter on what can be asked.

too easy to build an unhealthy relationship, even if only one person thinks it exists. That happens now without AI

Or "What would an album by X sound like"

how long before a band is made up of Elvis on vocals, J Hendrix on guiitar, Bozo on drums, C Burton on bass. I give it a few years/months

Read what you guys wrote about AI. Various responses but all boils down to the same thing.

You guys know about Tilly Norwood?

https://www.tillynorwood.com/

Watched a YTV about the legalities of it yesterday and some scary things was mentioned in it. One of the things mentioned is that it was trained on real people for movement etc.

I do not think the "Speaking to a loved one" idea is so far ahead in the future. Tilly has received a lot of attention and from what I understand was even offered a deal in a movie.

Widows 11 disappointments:

The H.265 video format that Steam likes to use still has no codec in Win11. The VLC player can play them back, but you don't get any thumbnails. I think the MS Store has something for it for a dollar, but people were saying it broke with an update last year.

The new folder icon used when there's media (like screenshots) in a folder is terrible! It covers half the image! That's just an icon with transparency stored somewhere, so I was able to find a free replacement, but why would they do that!? Oh, and the ability to pick what picture to use is totally broken now. (I think that was having trouble back in Windows 10.)

Windows 11 pluses:

Other than that crazy firewall issue I had, the upgrade was very well done. If it weren't for the different folder icons and task bar placement, you could scoop out my memories of Thursday and it would take me quite a while before I noticed my PC was running Win11 now instead of 10.

I don't have a problem with that. Actors are paid to pretend to be other people... why not go one step further and use pretend people.

At least AI is unlikely to go onto social media and say stupid crap if its filtered properly. Its not going to bomb your movie before its released.

People now may reject but as time goes along, it will be more accepted. Actors Guilds will hate it as AI doesn't necessarily need a Union to represent it... though the AI union is only a matter of time.

and it would take me quite a while before I noticed my PC was running Win11 now instead of 10.

I said similar 5 years ago when I swapped onto Win 11 and went looking for what they changed apart from Desktop. The biggest difference between 10 and 11 is the desktop.
Apart from moving settings around... took me 20 years to realise New versions of windows just change the desktop. They might add a few features but those features may never actually be useful.

Not in a rush to get WIn 12 if its just more of the same. I expect I won't be allowed to ignore the stupid AI in it.

Been following the whole Windows 11 25h2 thing everywhere now. According to Microsoft, my system is fully compatible with 25h2. (Ran the health check they gave me to check.

For those of us (people like me that are itching to get 25h2), there is a write up on how to get 25h2 if it does not show up in your update section.

https://www.kapilarya.com/windows-11-25h2-update-not-showing

Helps you go through all the tests and then how to get the actual update from Microsoft. Either via ISO or Installation assistant.

So far everything seems to be downloading smoothly. At 48% (step 1 of 3) and hopefully when I get up in the morning, I will have 25h2 on the system. My main reason for this "upgrade" is the bloatware removal option in 25h2. As per everything I have read you are pretty much back in the driving seat with this version. Will not be like win3.11FWG where you had absolute control and if you needed more, you just typed it out in DOS, but the OS is more givable.

Have not found anything with regards to defender yet, but hopefully this version can finally switch off defender completely. Well, defender and a few other things.

Holding thumbs and will let you guys know how it went. If I am gone for a few days.........it ended in worst case scenario, and I am struggling to get any form of OS on my system again. LMAO

Think because I am on the artist side of the coin, I look at it differently.

Let's say they do start using AI to generate actors. Fair, in what you are saying about them not doing the things you mentioned, but now you end up with more job losses. Careers being ended. The whole film industry taking a turn for the worst since everything is now created, recorded and mastered on a computer.

"NATGEO WILD - AFRICAN ELEPHANT" is now suddenly made in an office somewhere in Italy. Kills tourism, realism, locations, journalism and this list pretty much go on forever.

Yes, I do know this is the same argument that was used when CNC started. Today, CNC is an everyday used item in most workshops, but 1 CNC machine replaced 3 machines and 4 workers. Total unemployment rate went up by 1/4 and people manufacturing the original machines to do the work suffered and many closed down. More job losses due to the ripple effect.

I do not think we need more unemployment in the world.

Windows 11 25h2 installed.

System seems a bit more responsive (But could just be menu / float settings). Had a look at the normal items (things I use regularly that comes with windows) and all working like it should. On Idle I had a CPU and Memory drop of about 10%.

The add and remove feature has 3 sections now. 1 - installed apps (Been there), 2 - System components. Similar to the old "add and remove windows features" but do have options to remove game bar, windows security etc in there. and then a new section 3 - AI components. Mine is empty since I do not have AI installed but felt it odd that Co-Pilot was not under this section.

I have not tried to run a game or any of my programs as yet, but by the looks of things everything should be fine.

Welcome to Win11 25h2......for me anyway.

Windows 12 is expected to be released next year for those who are wondering. No minimum system requirements posted anywhere as yet but most "think" it will run on similar specs as Windows 11 25h2.

Microsoft has confirmed that at launch, Windows 11 version 25H2 will not introduce any new features. Features that rollout to version 25H2 will also be made available on 24H2, as they both share the same platform release and servicing stack. That means 25H2 doesn't include any unique features that are exclusive to it.

If you did get anything new its likely you hadn't turned on "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available" in windows update, as most of its updates were already available in 24H2. I am not expecting it to do much apart from change my version number.

Guess I might as well get it myself now:
vq1V9cr.jpeg

"Update" took about 5 minutes including the restart into windows.
RkzKuaM.jpeg

If you up to date before you install it, it doesn't add anything.

I wish it did but really, massive feature updates only happen when they release a new version of windows. And then if you lucky they build on older features added in previous versions. I used to wish they finish Multiple Desktop feature but it seems forgotten now.

Had all those settings on, even switched on the developers and had no luck with it showing in my updates. That is why I started following everything about it on the NET. Apparently, I am not the only person that had this issue.

So far visually not much differences I can see, have noted I now have a new microphone device named "clear voice". Ran Dorico and my usual startup stutter is gone (Used to stutter when switching on the ASIO), so assuming (Yeah, I know who she is the mother of), that the memory management has been improved.

I am yet to run Cubase and see what it does with the instrument selection. Used to have to clear memory to add additional instruments. Maybe that problem is sorted as well.

Have not run any games on it yet. I try to stay away from games during the day. Simply because of "NO work, NO pay". Starting a game during daytime means nothing else gets done.

My windows install hadn't had much chance to mess itself up his its only 5 months old now. On my previous PC I had to do a repair install once as windows update borked itself.

It only showed up for me today after I installed a Cumulative Update preview - I know they can break windows as sometimes they have undercooked features in them that are later fixed with full version. But I knew 25H2 was live so I took risk... a few hours later it showed on windows update.

Now I will ignore windows update again, let it force me to update.

I am not thinking about games until after next weekend.
SFC/DISM scan shows nothing wrong with install after update.

I try to squeeze every bit out of Microsoft with their updates. With older machines, the longer a version is out the better it is for the older machines, just for MS to break it up again with a new version and then they fix everything again until the next version. (Vicious circle). Although seems as if the got it right with 25h2. Still getting some updates now, which will probably suck my network dry for the next few weeks but seems to have been worth the effort.

I will run Pathfinder and possible 7D2D tonight. I have others but pretty much am getting bored with the others. Can only kill the same dragon so many times etc.

I will probably only get round to playing Pathfinder properly from next year when work quiets down. Still need to restart it and do a proper play through from the start. But just testing it cannot do much damage to my mental state. LMAO

On Idle I had a CPU and Memory drop of about 10%.
It is hard for my CPU to get below 0% but my memory usage seems to have gone up since update. Only by about 3% and it might settle back down. Normally idles on 29% used.
Most active process is the system idle process at 99%

Looks into Logitech Lamp array service... since he has no Logitech hardware. Seems Microsoft use it for Dynamic lighting. I have that feature disabled as its really basic.

I have several background items running while in IDLE. Things like WhatsApp, ASIO, VST etc starts up with my PC. ASIO4ALL start up with windows and then I manually switch it to Steinberg ASIO when working. But ASIO4ALL is what I use when editing mostly. Prefer it that way then I do not have to start them up anything individually when needed.

Also, you recall I am on a m720q, with 4GB RAM. LMAO.

CPU is averaging on 13% which used to be at around 20's
Memory is averaging at 32% used to be around the 50's
Disk is at 3% where it used to be around 20's

I use my SSD to cover on my low RAM so there is constant movement between RAM and disk. (Think you still corrected me on the terminology of it) so think it is the Page file? (Could be something else, cannot remember the right term for it)

Version updates (like 25H2) used to reinstall windows completely and leave a windows.old folder behind that was your previous install, That would result in you essentially having a new install of windows and it would seem faster.
Windows doesn't do that anymore so the speed boost may not be there.

I don't know how you are faster now but its a bonus.

LMAO was just about to ask you about this. LMAO, it is as if you read my mind.

I do actually have a Windows.old folder now which is 15GB in size. Was going to ask if it is safe to delete it or would you recommend hanging onto it for a bit?

I did not do the 25H2 via windows update so guess it when in as a new installation with the method I used to get it.

EDIT: Correction 15GB and climbing. Now at 48GB and still going.

EDIT2: 52GB in total

Boy, my car just needs constant attention.

Had this issue about 1300-miles into my road trip in September, but managed to resolve it temporarily to drive the next 700-miles back home. Unfortunately, it's back. I'm not entirely sure what it is yet, but it's possible I have a bad alternator, though mine is only about 3-years old now. But I have to spend the week going through things and seeing if I can resolve the issue before I start replacing parts--though I do need a new battery anyway. I'm going to poke around it and clean all the grounds in the engine bay and on the Starter that I can find, see if that resolves the issue. If not, take off the belt and inspect the alternator and maybe remove it and have it tested at a store.

Feels like I've done nothing but work on this car all summer. I guess it makes sense, considering it just turned 245k miles, but still! I've had so many projects this summer that I've wanted to get done, but the car is taking-up all my time. Hopefully this fix won't be too bad.

Also just yesterday had my stove top die. Turned it on to boil some water and instead smoke started coming out from under it and it smelled like burning plastic; it's been in need of replacement for awhile, as I managed to crack the glass on it several years ago with a heavy pan (I love my cast iron) and then for my wife's birthday on Wednesday, I made Steak Frites. While making the fries, I put too many in at once and my oil bubbled over and went all over the stove top; forgetting about the crack, I'd left it after cooking dinner and I think the oil got in there and shorted it out.

So the quest today is to go find a new stove top. They don't look too challenging to install, so hopefully I don't kill myself messing with the electricity. If I don't come back after this post, you know what happened...

Not sure what vehicle you have but over here we have a fairly simple alternator test. Start the car and then remove the positive terminal from the battery. If the car dies the alternator is dead. If it keeps running, then nothing wrong with your alternator. If the alternator is dead, instead of replacing the whole thing, have a look if you can just get a new diode plate for it. Then just unscrew the old one and put the new one in/ It's two small screws holding the diode plate down on the rear of the Alternator.

Stove tops, very easy as long as you remember to earth it. Easy way to know if you earthed it is take off your socks and shoes and stand on the tiles in front of your stove top. first touch the body of the top, if it shocks you (Not an extremely heavy shock) you missed the main earth on it. If no shock, then touch each element individually. If one of them shocks the earth to that specific element is not connected.

Works the same on your water pipes. If the taps gives you a slight shock, you need to check the earth strap on your pipes as well as the earth on your water heater (Geyser)

Good luck
