OK Monkeys, I've got one for ya, and it comes with a bit of a warning to any whom might be unaware like me.
It goes like this, apparently smart TV manufacturers are now allowed to sell your personal info and only have to have a wee little toggle hidden in the Privacy Terms portion of the settings, which if enabled, forces them to cease such activity.
If not, as soon as you connect your TV to the internet, or more specifically in my case, register your product, you are open to just about any manufacturer of electronics to interrupt what you're doing with a popup asking if you want to run X, Y, Z app.
In my case it was a Galaxy AO3s music streaming service, which is for a model of Samsung cell phone. The reason this dandy little gem started playing music is my new "Magic Remote" has an OK button that doubles as a scroll wheel, which can cause you to scroll to another option accidentally before clicking.
I was at my wits end thinking, is this a neighbor using a Samsung phone, did this app suddenly somehow magically enable my Wi Fi on the TV after trying and failing to get it to connect wirelessly? No, the fly on the wall, the spy hidden in plain sight, was the manufacturer of MY new TV!
Worse yet, after talking at length with not one, but THREE customer service people for my TV brand, it was not until I spoke to Samsung's CS that it was suggested I check the privacy settings. I get the weird feeling those other CS folks have a gag order on them.
Before ending the 3rd call, which was after I spoke to Samsung. I suggested if they want to SHARE, not SELL, people's personal info for more app access, they should have a popup the first time you access the app hub, that asks if you want to agree to those terms, and thus allow it.
IMO it shouldn't even be legal to do it the other way around, to engage in such activities, and force the consumer to find that setting before getting on the net and enable it in order to stop them. I can't tell you how ridiculous this is that we have to defend ourselves against our own possessions!
