Been there, done that. Once the idea takes over, I usually just have to give in.

Can't offer any advice on the laptops. I have no idea how much mine weigh, and they are always plugged in, though I do know they last less than 30 minutes if you are playing a game unplugged.

I'm super particular about my machines. I've been buying Thinkpads exclusively for the last 10 years or more, the Surface Go being an exception because it was cheap and met the needs I wanted it for at the time (tablet functionality for playing tabletop wargames, but with a little extra utility) and it still meets that need fully. But again, I'm a sucker for Thinkpads and getting one that weighs the same, but is more powerful and offers trackpoint is just a complete win in my book.

But yes, I will probably have to inevitably give in and buy one, even though I'll then have 3 different laptops for various purposes, which seems...redundant.

And a Steam Deck on top.

Its just the jealousy speaking, I really want an OLED Steam Deck, but I also need a new GPU and I cant do both this year.

Theres also potentially a Switch 2 coming next year, so probably sticking with Nintendo for handheld gaming. The kid will be happier that way as well.

Yes and the Steam Deck. I'm awash in devices; I also have another dozen handhelds ranging from Gameboy's to PS Vita, etc. I have an addiction to buying "cheap" used tech. Plus I spent $500 on a CPU/GPU upgrade for my desktop in August, a machine I use infrequently. I guess the one benefit to all this buying is that generally I afford it all by selling random stuff and other old tech I have around the house.

The OLED looks damn nice and I would also love to have one, but I ought to save-up and wait for Steam Deck 2 instead, since the OLED is only a marginal upgrade.

I still never owned an original Switch. It looks nice, but the games are too expensive for my taste and I don't generally care much for Nintendo games; though yes, my kids would be happy with it, but until then, they'll just have to keep exploring my Steam library and occasionally using one of my other dozen handhelds...

Got my Switch in 2017, at that time it was the only option for a handheld portable that played recent games. It was also much cheaper than a gaming laptop which I would probably have had to replace at least once by now. It still works fine for simple games and Nintendo stuff. Even if the the joycons kind of suck.

I dont really have much nostalgia for Nintendo outside of having an original Gameboy when I was small. I've had a lot of fun in the recent games with the family on Switch though.

I assume you mean Marriage Counseling, because I'll probably need that if I bring home more old technology.
My wife is used to it. I've got two gaming laptops, and a gaming desktop, but where my problem really is is headphones. I've probably got somewhere around $2500 in headphones (well, my PC's cost over 6000, but at least there's only 3 of them). I'm cutting back, though. I've only bought one headphone this year. AND, I've even been thinking about another one, but haven't felt any uncontrollable urges to buy it. I am the master of my domain.

Wow, those are some expensive headphones (and PCs for that matter)!

Think I've bought three different PCs this year (all tablet based Windows machines) and quite a few miniatures (for various Tabletop Wargames), but I try to keep all my purchases cheap and fund them myself. Don't quite like the feeling of supporting my hobbies and interests on the household income, so I do whatever little things I can do to scounge up the money for stuff.

I think my own uncontrollable urge is beginning to subside for now. The laptop I want just isn't within reach of the money I can put together, so I'll just have appreciate what I've got for the time being.

But maybe... I'll upgrade the screen in my Thinkpad, at least...

The headphones weren't that expensive individually. There's just a bunch of them.

I'm recently retired. My entire wardrobe now probably costs less than $100. We eat out extremely rarely, maybe once a month; my car, bought new, is 13 years old; my house is paid off, and I haven't bothered to go on a vacation in a few years. I have no credit card debt, etc. So I don't really spend much money on anything other than my hobbies and groceries. Plus, my wife has a good job, so she pays for half the groceries and such. Got two kids in college, but they have so many scholarships that the grand total for both for the fall semester was about $500.

So, yeah, I have to spend my retirement funds somewhere.

Congrats on your retirement, it sounds nice and the kids having scholarships is damn nice. My wife and I are still pretty damn deep in student debt (though mine is almost paid off!) and while college was worth it, I could have done it better if I'd been smarter financially!

It's the single good thing about getting old (I'm in my mid-fifties), having paid off all that stuff and not having to worry about money, but that's barely any consolation. I would agree to be broke and homeless if I could go back to my 20s.

I'm of the age now (40 next year) where I'm reflecting on my teens and 20's and having a lot of nostalgia for them. That said, I'm not entirely sure I'd go back, aside from the youthful vigor and lack of anxiety, life is better now.

I'm quite pleased with the skills I've developed, the relationships I've maintained and the family I've built, even if it means I don't have the patience to sit and play games all day and then go out all night.

Well, I definitely don't want to lose my family. I just want to get to do it all over again. Also, I'm in bad health, one of the reasons for my retirement, and I'd like to feel good again.

Sorry to hear, that really sucks; I'm just getting to the point where many of my close relations are developing health issues, some through no fault of their own.

But, it reminds me of a time in my 20s or so when my wife and I were driving home from some event or another and she's idly thinking and talking to me when she says, "it must suck to have chronic pain."

I couldn't help but look at her and say, "Yeah. It must." She had forgotten that I've had arthritis in my knees since I was a teenager.

But, to change subjects: I think I've semi-broken my obsession with getting another small and light laptop. I think I'm still going to check in the next year when the big companies are starting to write off a bunch of computers for depreciation, but I'm otherwise going to try not to think about it! It does help to remember that I bought my Surface Go for specific reasons, namely, using it for tabletop Wargames and reading rulebooks, which it does much better than a proper laptop. The Windows laptop functionality is just a bonus...

Well, I just had what could be the greatest lunch of my life. Went with my dad and right after we sat down he handed me a folded piece of paper. I opened it up and it was a huge check. I said, "What's this for?" because I thought maybe it was a college fund for my kids, but he said, "I sold the house, but don't need the money." Granted, I don't really remember most of my lunches, but this one has to be up there.

I guess I'll probably just buy a few, better Christmas gifts, and put the rest in my retirement fund.

My wife is mad at me now because I told her I was putting the money into my sports betting. :ROFLMAO: I love picking on her. I'll tell her the truth later.

I love the cookies, but I've always been a brownie person even though I haven't had one in many years, and I've had plenty of cookies since then. My aunt used to make brownies that were just incredible.

Brownies just don't excite me. Don't get me wrong, they're good, I like them, but if I hear that someone has brought brownies for dessert, I'm a little disappointed.
