Choosing to major in something I was actually interested in was the best decision I ever made. My degree isn't directly applicable to anything outside a Graduate or PHD program, but it gave me the skills and the knowledge that I needed to get into a career field. If I hadn't had it, I wouldn't have been well rounded enough for people to actually appreciate my other skills.

In other news: Yesterday I received a Flu shot, as well as a COVID booster and I'm thankful I was able to secure some help today, as the COVID booster always knocks me on my ass. Haven't had one yet where I didn't feel like I had the flu (at least the symptoms) for the next day.

The funny thing is, whenever I'm home sick, I get the overwhelming feeling to play old MMORPGs. Right now, I'm sitting here, considering jumping into Project 1999 or Turtle WoW, both private servers for old versions of their respective games. Keep in mind, I don't actually play these outside of these sick days, so it's weird to me that I want this comfort, as it feels like a bit of a waste of time, since I won't be going back to them anytime soon.

At any rate, I may fire-up World of Horror instead, as it's one I've been wanting to pay some more of and now with the full release, it seems like a good excuse, especially when Elden Ring seems like a little much for me right now...
I've been debating whether to get World of Horror for days now. I need to just pull the trigger.

I've been waiting for it to go on sale again, which it did this week. $15 seemed like a solid price to pick it up for and (I think) it'll run on my very low power Surface Go 2, so that was another point in its favor. Even if I'm currently playing it on my "powerful" laptop.

So far, it's not too shabby. Done 3 runs of the initial starting story and they've ran about 6-8 minutes a piece, which isn't too bad, especially considering I've failed all of them so far

I turned off my adblock on that sports site that I use (but don't post on anymore), and this is the first ad it gave me:

This is EXACTLY the sort of thing that makes me use an adblock. Not only is it intrusive, but it assumes I'm a complete idiot.

Now that ad makes me wonder... Doesn't that advertisement bring down all the advertising around it? YouTube has been tossing out some exceptionally dumb ones of late, which made me wonder if other groups advertising on YouTube might pressure Google to raise their standards. (Well, more like scrape their standards off the "it's not illegal" floor they seem to be using right now.)

I have a challenge for everyone: No shampoo/conditioner, deodorants, or body/beard soaps for a month starting today. The only thing you are allowed to use is regular bar soap (preferably natural) for your hands. Why this challenge? Because I want to see just how much you really need those products. I shower once a week with most products, but why not just quit completely and let the body do the job it was intended to do instead? You can rinse/scrub your body with as much water as you need, just no products allowed. Ok, the challenge is up! Good luck to me and those joining!;)
Well, the old Frindis did not have a bloody clue about what he was typing, but I do. It's been over two months without shampoo/conditioner and my hair is feeling great. No smell, no itchiness and it feels like you just dipped in a fresh water source. As for the beard, I have used wax because it would not look smooth without it. Feet and other more private areas with soap, which is something I should have mentioned. So, overall, no need for shampoo/conditioner, and excluding the more private areas, hot water does the job. I also did cut my hair recently, so while I was kind of afraid that perhaps there would be a smell or something, the only feedback I got was that my hair was rigid as hell.

What is the point of all this? 1. Less money. 2. I feel more fresh. 3. The cold does not matter to me as much. 4. A little deodorant is not too bad of an idea, but preferably without alcohol.

I read about this professor, maybe of biology, who never bathed or used deodorants or antiperspirants because he said that if you don't wash, your body will grow beneficial bacterial colonies that will prevent body odor and possibly improve your skin. The journalist didn't interview people who had to work with him to see how bad he actually stank :) Anyway, he only washed his hands.

I'm not sure I can stop using shampoo, though. My hair is extremely oily. Everyone would look at me and think I needed a bath. Maybe if I kept my hair really short. But I also have dermatitis on my head, and if I don't clean my scalp it gets out of control. Actually, I don't see how anyone can go without bathing. I was sick not that long ago and didn't bathe for a couple of days, and my eyes were burning constantly from whatever allergens were built up on my face.

Personally, though, as soon as it gets cold here, I'm going to stop wearing antiperspirant for at least a week because my armpits are all torn up. I use hypoallergenic antiperspirant now, but because I started using it when I already had broken skin, it's still driving me nuts. I think if I can just get the skin cleared up completely, I'll be good to go. I'm basically allergic to all deodorants.

Speaking of allergies and deodorants, when I was shopping for something hypoallergenic on Amazon, it brought up all these "natural" deodorants. Needless to say, the reviews were filled with people posting pictures of their red and swollen armpits. Why do people associate "natural" as being safer than man-made? Anyone who has allergies should realize that all that stuff they are allergic to is "natural". This deodorant was literally made up of the stuff people are most allergic to. And most poisons could be labeled "all natural", too.

The 'natural' term is a slight minus in my eye. The term never seemed to really mean anything. What else is it going to be? Supernatural??

P.S. I once got a brand of deodorant that I was allergic to. I don't remember what kind it was, though, so now I live in fear of finding out the hard way a second time.
I had a house full of deodorant that all broke me out and finally gave up and went with an antiperspirant that has a different kind of aluminum in it that doesn't cause me problems, except that you aren't supposed to put it on broken skin, so we're about to go full stink.

Fixed spaghetti tonight. The base, authentic sauce is just crushed tomatoes and basil, but I often put red pepper in. Usually I'll make meatballs and Italian sausage and cook everything together, leaving the meat grease in the pot. That's really the way I like it best, but I didn't want the extra calories tonight.

Another sauce I make uses olive oil as a base, and I add red pepper, garlic, rosemary basil and oregano. That's Guido's favorite.

Then there's fried spaghetti, which uses ketchup for sauce. That's my wife's favorite.

Alfredo is just oil, butter and parmesan. That's Elly May's favorite.

Now you know more stuff you never wanted to know. I just like talking about food. Maybe we should have a food thread.

just because this has been driving me crazy all day, the opposite of natural is synthetic, meaning something made by man that doesn't occur in nature. Sorry to be pedantic. My brain just wouldn't let this go.

My spaghetti sauce recipe is:

Cook meat in a pot (I usually use ground beef), then remove meat from pot. Add onions and garlic and cook for about 2 minutes, then add bell pepper and/or carrots. Cook for another 5 minutes or so and add tomatoes (I typically used pureed tomatoes), salt, pepper, paprika, whatever Italian herbs you have on hand (I typically use a store-bought mix) and a splash of balsamic or red wine vinegar. Simmer until the bell pepper/carrots are soft and blend it until smooth. Put meat back in and you're done.

I think using just tomatoes would work if you have very tasty tomatoes, but since I buy the cheapest ones I can get I find that the extra sweetness from the bell pepper or carrot and the acid from the vinegar really helps the taste.

I was raised on my immigrant grandfather's recipe of just tomatoes and basil, simmered for at least 30 minutes. So just about anything else doesn't taste right to me, although I used to experiment quite a bit, and, as I said, I usually put red pepper in.

We had a relatively large garden growing up, and we grew a ton of Roma tomatoes, enough that my mother could can the leftovers and it would last us until the next summer. There's something about home canning that is much better than commercial canning. Everything she preserved tasted fresh when you ate it. Had a whole garage full of Mason jars with tomatoes, beans, corn, etc.

I would love to have some of her pickles. Never got the recipe from her.

Do we have a thread for game discounts ?
There's a -65% offer on steam for detroit become human+beyond two souls+heavy rain bundle.
Saw that.

Only problems with having a discount thread is that there are always hundreds of games on sale and most of the thread will be out of date after a few days, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to have a thread where anyone who wants to highlight a particularly good deal can point it out.

No reason we can't give it a try. Nothing wrong with that. Do you want to start it?

I usually throw together a pretty simple sauce. Usually try to keep some Italian sausage on hand (frozen), brown that and throw in some chopped onion and garlic, few spices (oregano, thyme) and then use the "Organic Tomato Sauce" cans from Costco. Makes the sauce simple, straightforward and fast, even my wife can cook it (though I have to talk her through every step...)
