So either i or pcg has changed, top 100

After reading pcgs top 100, i noticed some strange. I think they only listed 5 games i even like and to be honest none are even in my top 20. Back 20 years ago id say half i played or wanted too. But in all honesty, i think i just have vastly different tastes.... for example an all time top 100 with out these is a travesty! :p

Starcraft
Dungeons of naheulbuek
Age of empires 2
Tropico 1/4
Dungeon keeper 2
Syberia
Dark eye of stativa
Dead in vinland
Star trek online
Dungeons and dragons online
Freedom force
Tomb raider (all but lets pick the new one)
Wasteland 2
Battletech
Life is strange
Blackwell series
Civilization V
No man's sky
The witcher 1
Mass effect andromeda (way better than the trilogy, just bladting around in the nomad is awhile mini game! But hey, atleast jennifer saved it as fem shep)
Midnight sun's
Dragon age 2, (while it does have some technical issues, the story and characters are better the best of the series). Sure dao is an epic quest and well done, but read the shanarra books and it will seam like a retread. Da2 is something special.
Neverwinter nights

A few games i can see not being on the top 100 as they are so niche, but in my top games of all time.

Idle champions
Starwars galaxies(fan server) best game ever made!
City of heroes
Cities skylines
Loren of the amazon
Mech warrior online
Mech comander 2 (best fmv ever!)
Anna
Banished
Galactic civ II ( i need to try 4)
Masters of orion(if you want a challenging 4x space game and dont care about graphics)
Jurasic wold evolution ( i hear three is really good sim wise, but the first is something special)
Oxenfree
Thief deadly shadows( way better than 1, Play the mission the cradle, its one of the greatest missions of all time. Must be done at night with the lights off . Its one of the scariest things you'll ever see. Truely epic!
Sunless sea
Banner saga (trilogy)

This stuff is of the top of my head, i know i have some other one time play stuff that i loved too maybe ill add it later.

So what are your top games?

Well, i dont agree with the order at all but thats fine, some of the games i never played but i do know they had a big impact on PC gaming.

I also believe that some games that have come out this year will make this list the next time they do it because there are some fantastic releases.

I dont agree with all of the top 10 either but i can understand why some of them are in there (Baldurs Gate 3, Witcher). I personally dont think a Dark Souls should be in the top 10, definitely should be on the list, but not top 10.

So this is a list of games on the top 100 i believe deserve to be there of the ones ive played (but NOT at the number they are at):

Dusk
Hotline Miami
Lethal Company
Clair Obscur
Cyberpunk 2077
at 74????
Deep Rock Galactic
Splinter Cell
(but NOT Chaos Theory)
Red Dead Redemption 2
Resident Evil
Hollow Knight
Grand Theft Auto
Diablo 2
Deus Ex
Counter Strike 2
(mainly because its counter strike)
Max Payne
HELLDIVERS 2
Half Life 2
Doom
(but its at 11th, not in the top 10? come on now)
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Baldurs Gate 3
(even if im not a fan of turn-based RPGs)

Ive omitted ones from this list that ive played but dont think they deserve a top 100 spot (Disco Elysium, Portal 2, Dishonored 2, Dark Souls remastered)

Games omitted from the list i think should be there, just naming a couple:

Left For Dead
Serious Sam
Wolfenstein
Sim City
F.E.A.R.
Mafia
Metro Exodus

i can list more for sure but itd be a long list lol.

A few games i can see not being on the top 100 as they are so niche, but in my top games of all time.

Cities skylines

Cities is at number 99.

Remember, there are many kinds of top 100's!

One big one is to recommend all the games you would recommend assuming some ideal person much like yourself with an excellent understanding of how games work (i.e. they don't need an hour just to get used to moving around with mouse/keyboard) and yet has not ever played any video game. Older video games are at a big disadvantage because, even if you can find them legally and can get them to run on a modern PC, the graphics will be terrible-at-best and many of the advances that have been made in gameplay will be missing.

Another is to just list off the games you've had the most fun with. Still another is to try and gauge what games the world has had the most fun with.

PC Gamer tries to split the difference. I think it's mostly the first type, but it also has weights to give the third type a boost. Plus, there are personal picks which gives the second type I listed a voice.

That said, Star Wars Galaxies with City of Heroes listed right UNDER it!? With the 20th anniversary of the Trials of Obi-Wan just a week away?? Don't be replacing one travesty with another!! ;)

All the games i listed i have zero issue with click to launch, outside of mech commander 2, freedom force can also use an updated exe that helps with a curser bug.. Though i will say for what ever reason many have an issue with dao, but i dont, which just leaves me to believe tons of people just dont know how to set up a computer. No clue why folks dont learn with how much they are needed but i guess the days people just use a phone for everything and the auto config, till they dont. Even telling someone to grab cc cleaner to flag drivers, gets puzzled looks and conspiracy theories on hot it will destroy your computer.

Here is a fun game to play, pick any game in your library and see how long it takes before someone posts about crashing or wont start. Its typicall not beyond the first page.

But i digress, my main point i was trying to get at is nearly the entire list are games i have zero interest in even if you paid me to play. Years ago i was far more interested in games they would recomend. Perhaps though there are just far more choices too, so people really have ton of options. I guess i should know better though as my favorite games are always trolled by people saying how horrible they are

I also dont buy anywhere near as many games now, but even the ones i really want are no where near the list, but i did not list them as i have zero clue if they'd be as good as i hope.

@dxchase

list um! :)
Other games i omited for not being off the top of my head

Blade runner
The longest journey
Night of the rabbit
Omerta, a really cool vibed turn based game
Gone home, something short and sweet and a unique narrative style
Stronghold, i liked 1 and 3, but it seams 2 is more popular
Warcraft iii
Kathy rain,

are you seeing the trend i like point and clicks! I guess that style game is not popular any more. Going off their list. I guess first person action adventures is whats popular these days and its something i never liked going back to the days of doom, i realize thats an fps, but to me that style and single player oblivion style stuff, which so much of today's stuff is based on just isnt for me. so i guess that would explain a few things.

In the past theyve said its a list of 100 games that they recommend people play today, rather than a list of all time greats. If it was all time greats there wouldnt be any point doing it every year, because it would hardly ever change.

I do always like reading it though, was very happy to see Against the Storm sneak in, even if it was at like 98. If The Last Spell makes it next year Ill be very happy, but that games probably a bit too niche.

Also Clair Obscur should have been way higher IMO. There a weird backlash against it across other forums though, almost like old school JRPG fans are gatekeeping the genre against it because lots of people who havent got on with other JRPGs like it. Internets gonna internet.

As you all know my go to game is SATISFACTORY it has won tons of awards so how come it only got position 59.

What really puzzles me is pc gamer team are mature adults but they give top marks to games with graphics that look like they are made for 7 year olds.

Maybe they should put new categories in their top recommended games such as the age range of the players they think the game might appeal to..... example ..... guild wars 2 and some Wow games have cartoony graphics , would you expect a 60 or 70 year old gamer to use them .... if somebody saw me using gw2 i would feel embarrassed

Yeah, they also don't seem to like 4X games much, either. Civilization would normally make the list somewhere, but that series has fallen off, and they don't seem interested in putting Civ 4 or 5 out there.

Yeah. Lots of them, but +1 for saying that mature gamers are 60 at a minimum!
