Get caught faking it last year, change the lead vocal so its not the "same" as before... wait long enough that people forget story.,.. go back to faking it again.
Sad to see it but happens more often than you think. Do not get me wrong and think I am condoning it, but I do understand as to why it is being done.
The least paid job in the world is an artist. We all joke and say "Well at least my kids will have money since then my music will be worth more"
You pay say $100 per ticket at a show. You are a fan and want to see your favorite artist and pay it with a smile. Of that $100 the venue needs to be paid, staff, equipment, lighting, security etc. Everything comes from that $100 you paid for your position somewhere in the crowd.
Mimed shows originally started back at BBC days in the 60's/70's. Instead of hiring a whole sound crew while a band plays live on BBC, the artists mime and they save money on the sound crew. (This is the earliest I am aware of it happening, might even happened before but BBC is first as per my knowledge)
Artists started realising that they are now able to "perform" even when sick. Producing a mimed show for fans instead of cancelling a show or tour, well financially just made more sense. Miming became the way to not "let down the fans". Vocals are usually the first to suffer when sick and this stopped this problem. In addition, saved the artists from losing money for simply being human.
When everyone started to have a say about the music industry it was decided (Insisted) that you will have 1 person doing 1 specific job on a production (Show) E.g. Audio with its own crew, lights with its own crew, techies with their own crew, etc.. When these laws came into effect, artists abided by it,
but ticket prices went from R50 to R590 per ticket. Not even mentioning the R900 golden circle tickets and well VIP tickets became unaffordable. Using South African Currency here since it is factual ticket price increases. Sold out shows became a thing of the past and only the "Creme de la creme" was able to go watch their favourite artists. Instead of HUGE shows they started "A night with" evening usually at someone's home or a restaurant. Music was unplugged, included a meal and tickets was affordable. This nearly killed the industry.
To fix this, Artists started using what they have had available to them in emergencies all this time and started miming some shows to cut cost and to be able to produce a show to fans at better prices. Here in South Africa, I can get a front row seat (Golden Circle ticket) for R450. Obviously, artist dependent.
So back to the $100 you paid for your ticket, even after miming, the artist you went to see will probably, after paying everyone their dues, put 3% of it in their pockets. The artist put on a show, for you, that you enjoyed, to be able to take home $3. The hundred $3 the artist made for that night needs to carry them forward till their next show or album which does not come cheap.
Like I say not condoning it but there is a reason why it is being done.
