How much $ does one spend to get a GL on Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes

Being new to the SWGOH game, why does CG make it so hard to get a Galactic Legend or even get a halfway decent character to be competitive?

I don't know about competitive. If I look most posts are from a few years ago and might be out of date.

I wonder if @Zuesboy23 ever heard about how hard it was to become a Jedi back when Star Wars: Galaxies first showed up. Even being rich wouldn't have helped there. You have to be flat out lucky AND willing to do a lot of work AND willing to lose all that work to perma-death.
