Hey everyone! So i am just getting into pc gaming and would like to now build my own. The problem is that i dont know anything about which parts are better than others. Like for the cpu, is intel or amd better for gaming. Which model too? Also want 32 gb of RAM. Looking to keep the build under $1500...

Thanks in advance
Dave

Hey Dave, welcome to the forums! If you are completely new to the computer building world, I would recommend this video:

it's long, but it is a great orientation to the world of custom PCs. The best advice I can give is to take your time, do your research, and really understand what you are doing and what you are buying. That will make your experience much more rewarding in the end, trust me! Plus, the learning is part of the fun.

You should watch other build videos on youtube for a variety of perspectives. Channels like Gamers Nexus are great resources for reviews on hardware. Once you start looking at specific parts, read reviews from reputable sites like TomsHardware and AnandTech. And ask questions here :)

Here is a useful article comparing CPUs on average: https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/cpu-hierarchy,4312.html

Here is a useful chart comparing GPUs on average: https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gpu-hierarchy,4388.html

PCPartPicker is a great resource to play around with different component combinations: https://pcpartpicker.com/

Now here is my very condensed two cents on the current "state of the union" as it were:

Intel and AMD both offer competitive CPUs, and lately they are trading the crown back and forth on which is better for gaming each generation. It's a close race at the moment and we as consumers have several good options in the Ryzen 5, Ryzen 7, i5, and i7 product lines.

AMD and NVIDIA both offer competitive GPUs. NVIDIA tends to have the edge in advanced features like raytracing, while AMD tends to have the edge in raw performance per dollar. You should decide what kind of games you want to play, what resolutions / settings you want to play them at, and what framerates you are hoping to achieve, then we can help point you in the right direction.

16GB of DDR4 RAM is the current "gaming standard", although it's slowly moving towards 32GB and DDR5.

A 1TB NVME SSD is the current standard storage solution.

The case is an aesthetic choice, but airflow is important for cooling.

The power supply should not be neglected. Spending a few extra dollars on a quality unit will give you peace of mind that you are feeding your expensive components with clean, reliable power.

If you've made it this far in my wall of text, congrats! My advice is to use the resources I've listed above and start playing around with a parts list on PCPartPicker, then post it here for feedback! :)

@Dave_ can't recommend a video card without knowing your monitor resolution or if a monitor is to be included in the budget. btw the just released B760 DDR5 motherboards are still starting to show up on sites such as Newegg so if you give it another week or two there will be less expensive boards to choose from than the board linked below. This build doesn't include a graphics card but it gives you a rough idea of what to expect.

LIAN LI LANCOOL 216 X Mid Tower Case $99.90

Welcome to the forum :)

Will you need to buy peripherals like monitor, keyboard, mouse as part of the $1,500—assume US dollars?

The key first bit from the great advice above is:
what kind of games you want to play, what resolutions / settings you want to play them at, and what framerates you are hoping to achieve
Your desired outcome is the key thing, our experts can then work back from that :)

Here's a PCG article you may also find useful:

Not intending to push you over your intended budget but I want to give you something to look at. If you added this card to that build I posted up above it would the bring the total cost to $1777.83. btw this card (RTX 4070 Ti) was just released yesterday and it's slowly trickling into US hardware sites. This card is meant for gaming at 1440P.

I'll post this MSI card as an example.

alrigty guys, was up late last night with my uncle who builds pcs talking about what parts i should buy and blah blah blah. So here is what i have so far.

Cpu- AMD Ryzen 7 5800x

CPU Cooler- be quiet dark rock pro 4 or pure rock 2 black... still debating which one

Motherboard- Gigabyte x570 Aorus Elite

RAM- Corsair 3600 32GB

Case- Phanteks Eclipse G360A

Power Supply- Thermaltake tough power gf1 snow 850w Gold+ certified

Operating system- Have an extra windows 10 installation around the place. But i heard u can upgrade it for free... That true?

For the monitor, i am still debating between putting 2 27inch monitors or 1 big curved 34 inch monitor. Will go with a 1440p and hopefully around 144hz or something like that...

Any suggestions???
Thanks
Dave

Change the psu in that build. You will never see a Thermaltake psu recommended on any respectable tech site. Look at Corsair, Seasonic, Super Flower, MSI, Phanteks or NZXT. As far as the case goes you're going to want a 120mm 4-Pin PWM rear exhaust fan for that case so you're looking at another $10+ added to that which brings the cost of that case to $110+.

This case not only comes with that rear exhaust fan, it's a better case overall.

5700X > 5800X (same performance for less money not to mention the 5700X runs cooler)

So for the case ive switched it to the Corsair iCUE 4000X RGB ATX Mid Tower Case. But for the power supply i am still stuck. I was looking on pc part picker .com but i couldnt find a 850w gold power supply that is white to go with the color scheme so far...
Add a rear 120mm exhaust fan to that case.
