I have 3 fractured bones in my foot. There is no caste as such, just the boot that I have to wear all the time.
the bones appear to be related to my toe movement so its not possible to put a caste on them. Its the area between my heal and my toes, so its best described as the foot.,

Its strange sleeping with one shoe on. My other foot feels left out.

I don't have an end date, I need to see an orthopaedic surgeon in a week or so and maybe find out more.

Just hope you don't die as an urban cowboy with just one boot on while the other foot is jealous for not getting to wear one, but I'm sure you'll get well long before that.

Yikes, that's a serious fall. Hopefully it'll be a quick and relatively painless recovery. Time to get a Steam Deck or a Gaming laptop? I forget if you have either.

I got a wild hair up my butt yesterday, having woken up at 2am and been unable to sleep. I decided I really enjoy using AI, but I'm not a big fan of the environmental impact, so I wanted to see what I could do running it locally. Long story short, I'm running a...I guess LM? on my laptop and my desktop for general answering of questions; it works alright, but is a fair bit less straightforward than something like ChatGPT or Copilot. It gives me much deeper technical answers to questions when I'm really just looking for something in plain English. But I can try different models, so I may have to find one that works a little better for me.

On my Desktop it actually defaults to using my CPU (Ryzen 5 5600) because my 6700XT has no CUDA cores. However, it works very well just doing that. The bigger issue was that I wanted to continue with image generation, so after tons of futzing yesterday getting Stable Diffusion working on my laptop (with an NVIDIA GPU), I decided to see if I could somehow get it working on my AMD GPU in my Desktop.

It took all afternoon and evening, then some of this morning, but I've finally got my 6700XT generating images. It's relatively slow, taking around 5-10 minutes to generate an image, but the fact that I'm running it all locally on my machines, using my solar power is just...great.

I know it's not terribly interesting to see another piece of AI generated art, but again, I'm just excited by the fact that I don't need to go through some massive corporation who's actively harming the planet to do so and I was able to do it on AMD hardware.

Must be an American thing. My parents would say it not-infrequently and it's definitely something my friends have also said to me. At least I think..could be regional too, my parents grew up in the Midwest, so might be a Midwest American thing specifically.

Been similar here. Kids have had some sort of mild cold, so sniffly and coughy. Mostly they've slept alright, except for like Wednesday when my littlest one woke up around 11pm and was very uncomfortable.

I'm still futzing with running AI on my local machines. I found a new model for the Inference AI that acts much closer to ChatGPT or Copilot and is a great general use model so far. I've been querying it for help with generating pictures in Stable Diffusion.

One thing I find amusing that it told me is that I have to specifically state (if I'm generating characters), "two arms, two legs", because I kept getting characters with several limbs or too many fingers.

Also the Inference AI used to be hitting my CPU, but since I got Stable Diffusion working with a workaround for AMD cards, it's been hitting my GPU instead.

Anyway, I'm feeling mighty tempted to find myself something like a 4070 Super just to make my life easier, though I'm not sure if it's necessary anymore, given I've got things working. It would just make stuff faster, which I don't think is necessary, because I'm not really doing any proper work, just goofing around and trying to alleviate my use of corporate AI solutions.

Feel like I'm following in Zeds footsteps here.

Sounds like as you get closer to a full recovery, you can run over that other foot and get another 6 weeks in bed.

My room is not designed for someone with a broken foot. Given I almost been in this room for 60 years now and the amount of time spent with a broken foot is 2 weeks, that makes sense. I normally unplug PC if there is a chance of storms overnight, plugging it back in with one working leg is a challenge - thinking about fixing that is a challenge too.

Need to move some furniture but well, I can't do that now.

I thought game was playing up last night, now I realise the power board the controller was charging off, wasn't plugged in... doh

6 weeks is minimum, I need to wear a weight bearing boot for a few months after and learn how to walk again...

I did end-up picking up this a PC for my nephew today and I kind of feel like I stole it at $160, as it's a decent platform to build on.

It's a mITX mobo and Case, a thermaltake something or other and it has an aftermarket thermaltake cooler. But the specs as I picked it up are as follows:

Ryzen 5 4500
16Gb DDR4
RX 570 4Gb
120Gb SSD

I brought it home and installed Windows (It had a broken install of SteamOS on it) and then benched it with 3DMark Timespy seeing a 4047 score. Then I swapped in my 1070 GTX and that immediately bumped the score to 6122, which is not bad at all for 1080p. It ends-up being only about 1000-points behind my laptop and I think it's a solid platform for a much newer GPU in the future.

That said, boy this thing was hacked together. I checked the BIOS first thing and noticed XMP wasn't enabled and that immediately broke the system, because it turns out the RAM is mismatched, both with brands and speed. So after fumbling around for awhile and resetting the CMOS several times, I finally got it to boot again, only to discover that broken SteamOS install.

From there, I decided to just disassemble it and discovered the screws holding the sides of the case on are both mismatched and missing several, using some jury rigged random screw to hold one part on. After that, I noticed the SSD just floating, hanging by the cables (not a huge deal and I've certainly done this) and then upon trying to remove the GPU, I noticed the motherboard was actually only held by two screws on opposing corners and was actually lifting out and bending when I was trying to remove the GPU.

Lastly, I wanted to remove the thermaltake CPU cooler, so I got started on that, but it turns out, no one actually secured the CPU in the socket properly, because as soon as I began to pull the cooler off, it yanked the entire CPU out of the socket, which remained attached to the cooler by the thermal paste. This ended-up bending about half a dozen of the pins on the CPU. I spent about 20 minutes straightening the bent pins out with my Xacto knife and a plastic razor blade, eventually succeeding and putting the CPU back in the socket so I could test things out again and ensure that it was working. Thankfully it all worked out and the PC booted back up without a problem.

Anyway, I'm going to disassemble it again, clean it and store it so that I can show my nephew how to put everything together and install the OS. Also forgot to mention that I dug up an old 500Gb 2.5" SSD to use as the OS drive rather than the 120Gb disk it came with.

Not wanting anything is normal for me. Its helpful when you don't have a lot of money to start with. Headphones in recent years were a change from me only spending money on PC parts. those are the only things I have spent any cash on in the last 3 years or so. Sort of don't need any of either right now... spent all day listening to music, first time in month or so... can play the game I am without needing to hear it now.

I should say, I'm still buying random stuff; I'm pretty sure I just have an addiction to random new hardware and old computers.

I've had my Surface Go 2 for three or so years now and honestly, I love it to pieces. It's slow, imperfect and only has one USB-C Port, but it's been a great machine to carry around at only 1.2lbs and able to play some basic games if needed. I use it for Wargaming to track stuff, I use it for general PDF reading, web surfing, etc. A few months ago, I decided I was finally going to upgrade it and decided to go with a Samsung Galaxy Tab S7+; it's been a pretty good tablet so far. It does most of that stuff I do with my Surface Go, with the exception of playing my Steam Library.

That said, I've recently grown annoyed with it. I picked-up (used) the official keyboard/trackpad cover, hoping to use it a little more like my Surface Go and frankly...it sucks. The trackpad is pathetic, using Winlator on it (Windows emulation) sucks, because it doesn't properly track the mouse; it's annoying as hell to be trapped into webpages formatted for Android on phones, it doesn't allow you to manipulate your own files and data without doing some dumb workaround/hacky thing. So, I ended-up going back to my Surface Go a couple of days ago and just being so much happier being on a proper OS where I feel like I actually have control.

Anyway, the Surface Go is pretty slow and while I like the 10" form factor, it is a little bit small and it is feeling pretty slow, especially given it can't really run stuff like Civ 5 with any speed. So I started looking the Surface Pro line on eBay; unfortunately, all of them were a bit out of my price range. I'd really love a Pro 7+ with an i7-1165G7, but they're around $400, which is too much to pay for what is essentially a a third, not frequently used machine for me.

But looking for a PC for my nephew got me addicted to perusing Craigslist and last night I came across a Pro 7 with an i5-1035g4, 8Gb of RAM and 256Gb SSD. Not exactly the specs I was looking for, but the seller was only asking $140 for it and these tend to go for about $250+ on eBay, so I emailed the seller and offered them $100 (because lowballing is how you do) and they responded they'd take $120 for it. So, after some emailing back and forth, I connected with the seller today and paid $120 for a Surface Pro 7 in pretty good shape.

At this point, I'm now installing Fedora Linux 43 on it to see how that goes. I think it would do Windows just fine like my Surface Go does, but I'm curious to try something Cursed with Microsoft hardware. Assuming this all goes well and I like this thing, I think I'll finally sell my Go and my Samsung Tablet, which should more than recoup the cost of this thing.

Special thanks to my wife who loaned me the $120 to pick it up. What a lovely woman to support my stupid decisions.

I have a Surface Laptop Go Beardy, I call it my "little buddy". I mainly use it in the AM for net to help make my 42" OLED last longer. I agree they're slow (mine even slower than yours), but also useful as long as you know and respect it's limitations.

For some time now I've been doing a 2 mile foot route 4 days a week in between my 3 day a week combo resistance band (upper body) spin bike full work out. I started out walking it to avoid aggravating my old track hamstring injury. Since I found the ham stays in better condition if I stretch it several times during my daily post workout hot bath, as well as resting it on my task chair's pullout leg rest when at my PC, I've been finishing the last half of the walks with a jog.

I started realizing my cheap Asics running shoes are probably inadequate for jogging on sidewalks and tarmac without strain due to my need of more shock absorption and stability. So today I made a mad dash to the Brooks Outlet Store just north of where I live. For a long time Brooks have been HQed here, and they make very good running shoes. On the phone yesterday they said they had one of their very popular last year's models for $65.

I got there today less than 15 min after they opened and my size in that shoe was already sold out. So I looked at another model that is built a bit more for stability, but still has adequate shock absorption. The mesh upper is also more durable. They were retail a bit higher price at $160 compared to the other retail of $140. So the outlet closeout price was $90. I ended up buying them and got home 15 min before our Seahawks home game against the Vikings, played here. They shut them out 26 - 0. So the our Hawks are now in a 3 way tie with the Rams and Bears for best record in the NFC.

I'll probably wear the shoes tomorrow on my Mon walk/run, but likely after lunch vs breakfast as it will be in the 30s and raining in the morn. The eventual goal is to hopefully be able to run the whole 2 mile route, or at least most of it. It might be wiser to at least walk the first 3 blocks that has an uphill grade as a warm up.

I don't run--cause I'm lazy, but also bad knees--but I do try and get 10000 steps a day and yeah, I just go through em. Not sure if I'll get my steps this coming week though, cause it's cold and I'm a coward.

I do really love the Surface line. I'm actually very happy to be using this new one today, it's just...so much better than using Android.

I kind of coddle my Asics shoes. I don't wear them often for just walking around, only short distances in between hot and cold weather. I also brush the soles clean in hot tap water whenever they have any dirt or debris on them. The rest of the time when outdoors I'm in my Keen sandals or winter casuals (Sketcher Mariner). The outsole on the Asics has very little wear, and the midsole still feels the same as when I bought them. They're just a cheap model that wasn't designed for shock absorption or stability.

The Brooks will be reserved to just the 2 mi route (maybe occasional trail running too), and never a daily walker. I can use the Asics for that. In colder weather I actually spend most of my time indoors in my winter slippers, which are Sherpa lined, Pigskin suede low moccasins. In hot weather I'm barefoot when indoors.

I forgot to mention above that besides the mesh uppers on the Glycerins being more durable than the $65 model, the outsole gets a top rating for durability. The most comprehensive running shoe site I've found (run repeat), said they took their Dremel tool to twice the speed that they normally do to test sole abrasion on this model, and it still got the highest rating. They described the sole as making this shoe like "tanks". The slight tradeoff is the mesh is less breathable and the shoe is a bit heavier, but I've had New Balance trail running shoes that were quite a bit heavier and MUCH less breathable. I also weighed the new shoes last night and they are about a half ounce lighter per shoe than my Asics. Weight and breathability are very important if you race, train for racing, or live in a hot clime, but none of those apply to me.

Fun fact, I'm pretty sure the reason they call this model the "Glycerin" is it's their first model I think that used the Nitrogen infused foam. You know, Nitro Glycerin. Just hope I don't blow up using them!

I had my first MicroCenter experience in Dallas the other day and it was amazing! I went Friday night so it was absolutely packed, so I didn't get a ton of time to peruse at my leisure. I was this close to picking up a 1440p monitor but decided against it at the last minute. I can wait until after Christmas.
