Maybe at some point in the future drone laws will relax a bit and their battery tech will allow longer range and we can just send one about a half mile ahead on the highway and it would be programmed to alert of hazards on the road. Just set it to auto return every so many miles, slap in a backup battery, and off you go. Either that or have lots of cameras set up on the highway and have an optional service you could pay a nominal fee monthly or by route you take (some highways get a lot more clutter than others), that would send alerts to your phone.Mine is also a pitty. He's ten now and we're thinking about another one to cushion the blow when he kicks it. Best dog I've ever had. But maybe that's just all the training I put into him. 😆
500 miles from home, 500 more miles to go. And of course, early on in the trip I hit an unavoidable, shredded truck tire. Tried to put it between my wheels as the best option, but it bent my front subframe and did something to my alignment; been pulling left pretty good for the last 300 miles. Of course, it always pulls left because of a sloppy steering rack, but this is worse than usual.
The subframe I can replace when I eventually get home, but I'm going to call around at our halfway destination here and see if anyone can get me an alignment right away before the next leg of the journey. A lot of shops open in about 5 minutes, so I'm really hoping they can just get me in immediately and resolve the issue before my Mom even wakes up here at the hotel.
Otherwise, guess I'll need to drive on it and ruin my tires, which will suck because they've still got plenty of life left in them.
Good luck with the alignment. I changed struts on my 79 Corolla once, reusing the old springs. First time using a spring compressor or replacing struts. When I took the thing in to get it aligned (old non rack type), the guy said the struts were not tight enough and couldn't do it. So I tightened them in his lot. Then the alignment process started. The adjusting rods were pretty rusty, he sprayed them liberally and waited a bit. You could hear very loud creeks as he was adjusting them, in between turning them he was glaring at me.
Normally this type of steering is much easier and quicker to align. I felt like telling him the prior owner drove it a lot in Montana where they salt the roads a lot when I apologized, but I was worried making up excuses would further anger him. I certainly got my money's worth, and he was glad to see me go. It was definitely not one of my best days, or his.
