A love letter to the games that made our lives better (add your own impactful games)

Three years ago I took a chance on V Rising, an early access game with twin-stick-like combat (it's like Path of Exile 2 combat). I had never played a game with combat like this. I struggled mightily at first, constantly losing my cursor and fighting in the wrong direction (lol). Guido kept me alive, though, and the game's atmosphere was intoxicating. I was living in that world. Other things that I loved were the base building (there's no such thing as an ugly base in V-Rising), crafting, the endless unique bosses and magic progression. I was totally in love.

The studio announced that it would update the game only once per year, in late April or early May. And so for three summers in a row, through the 1.0 release last year, I spent the hot and humid days inhabiting this incredible world. Finishing the game's 1.0 version last summer was bitter-sweet. The grand finale was amazing, but now it was over. My V-Rising summers had come to an end. I put the game aside and vowed to play it again some day while keeping an eye on the developer to see what was next for them.

Today is the day I decided to check on the developer. And what do you suppose is arriving like clockwork? On April 28 they will release a major free expansion to V Rising.

I could make this so sappy you'd still be rolling your eyes on your death bed, but I've had a difficult time adjusting to my kids leaving the nest, and this game, along with Satisfactory, has helped me through. So I'm pretty darn happy to see V-Rising rising again just in time for summer.

That's a difficult question. I can't really think of any specific games that have had a major impact on my life apart from how much I enjoyed them. Of course there are games that hold a special place in my memory because I played them with my friends, but honestly the games themselves aren't necessarily special, it's the fact that I enjoyed them with friends that makes the memory special.

Though if I had to pick one game that was part of one of the most impactful moments of my life, I'd have to go with Skyrim, which was part of my proposal to my wife.

Its helped me take my mind of all the bad stuff thats happening in the real world ... over last few years its giving me something to occupy my mind whilst my wife has been ill both in hospital and at home ..... its made me cut down a few trees so i have paper to use in word to keep track of where everything is ..... its given me big challenges and burnt a lot of midnight oil ...... i shared my save files with a few players because they said i could not have done it without mods ..... i showed a none gaming buddy what i had done and it took me about 20 minutes to explain how everything works and at that point i pinched myself and though ... hey did i do all that .

You know what i am talking about dont you.

I set up a save right at the start of the marriage ceremony between my player character and a character I had edited to look like her and have her name.
I was very romantic. We had a long distance relationship, about a 6 hour drive, and we were talking on the phone, and I said, "Hey, let's get married." And she said, "Okay." On our 20th anniversary, she said, "Hey, let's renew our vows." And I said, "You're going to say "no" this time, aren't you?"

I have 1 big one that stands out in recent memory and thats Destiny 2. Even if its now a game i dont play and i dont really interact with the people from the clan i ran in the game, it still was pretty impactful. Ive had some great times with not just clan members, but my family. There was a point where my wife, son and I would be doing strikes, nightfalls, dungeons etc. together. It was a fond memory.

On top of Destiny 2 still having one of the best feeling gun gameplay ive every played, I loved helping new players to the game too. My clan accepted new players because of this and those too left good memories.

Between Bungie being a terrible developer and us growing out of the game because of its stagnate progress, we have moved on, but ill never forget the time i had with it.

Maybe ill go back sometime down the line when theres more actual game to play but, for now, i try to remember the fond memories i once had in the game and not dwell too much on what the game did/has become.

What happened? I never played it, but from reading PCG it looked like it was going great for a long time and then something just blew up on them and they never seemed to recover. I know people were at least temporarily angry when they removed old content from the game, but not sure other than that.

Man, where to start. It just kept releasing lesser quality expansions with fewer or engaging missions to start. When Destiny 2 was with Activison for their 1st expansion like 5 years ago. It was huge, came with unique new weapons, armor, area etc. Then the next expansion was half that stuff and the planet wasnt new, just came from the first game. Then half the content the season after. Seasons started re-releasing old guns because they kept updating how guns acted with "perks" instead of giving us new guns/armor.

They completely abandoned one of their actually unique and fun game modes (Gambit) and, probably somethin that bugs a lot of other players more than me, they removed old content (and by old content i mean the original campaign to the game) and is completely inaccessible for new players, the list goes on and on.

The last big expansion (the whole sagas conclusion from D1 until now) was good, new content was deep and they also released one of their better modes in years (onslaught i believe) a little while after.

That shine wasnt so bright because Destiny 2 had been on a major decline for a good while before that and it kinda just fell back into that rut, then Bungie changed up how they do seasons by releasing "chapters" and new systems thats made the game unstable for so many since then.

The storyline is also another iffy spot. Destinys original big arc is done and whats playing out now, a lot of players dont like it or find it nowhere near as good as the arc that ended.

Also their PVP is rife with cheaters and its a problem bungie seems to be doing little about.

I wonder if maybe at some point they didn't split the team up and start working on another game. That's kind of what it sounds like. To make these things work forever, it would seem that if you aren't a massive studio, then you need to just concentrate on the one thing so that you can keep updating it with great content.

I've never actually played this. When it first launched I was in the middle of several thousand hours of Warframe and didn't want to switch, and when I finally quit playing Warframe, Destiny 2 didn't seem so attractive anymore. I knew they had cut a lot of old content, which made me wonder whether the early game would be enjoyable.

Warframe just keeps everything, including the PvP mode that probably hasn't been played by anyone in years. The downside is that the game is baffling to newcomers. There's just so much there it's hard to wrap your brain around it. However, if you keep the wiki up and just dedicate a few days to it, it's pretty rewarding.

Thanks for your summary of what happened. I've been curious about this for awhile.
