A Journey of Nostalgia: The Disappearance and Future of Save File Carryovers in Game Series

Back in the day, it wasn’t uncommon for games in a series to ask for a save file from a previous entry. For example, Dragon Age 2 would pull info from DA1 and create a statue of your old character. But now, that kind of feature seems to have faded, even though we’ve got massive hard drives and cloud saves that make it easier than ever. The last time I saw this was in The Witcher 3, which did a great job carrying over details like a tattoo from the second game. Before that, it was Dragon Age 2.

Has anyone else experienced this recently? And do you think any upcoming games might bring it back? Maybe Kingdom Come 2 could...

I keep all my saves on 5.25 floppies just in case. I make sure they're all orange so I know they're the good ones.

Joking aside back in the day save crossovers weren't common, nowadays they are, but not all games have them. I kinda like both formats, sometimes it's nice playing a sequel to a game and see how the actions effect the game, but I also like games not like that.

I don't want to have to play through the previous game/games for +126hours just to see other things.
Like imagine wanting to see all of skyrim but instead of just replaying that game over and over, ya have to go through morrowind and oblivion again and again just to see some stuff in Skyrim. I love Mass Effect, but come on......
