Gaming is subjective. GOTY lists always rely on the reviewers/publishers specific biases and likes and interests. The Game Awards Show is a massive marketing ploy and popularity contest. It’s useless to be infatuated by year end GOTY lists, and instead make your own based on your own experiences. My favorite YouTuber viseogamedunkey taught me that your own GOTY list doesn’t need to be games released that year only, instead focus on the games you played throughout the year and what you liked best.
So far this year, Yakuza 0 and Cyberpunk 2077 are my top contenders for my personal GOTY. Yakuza coming out in 2018, Cyberpunk originally in 2020. These two have been among the best games I’ve played all year and I don’t suspect anything topping it before January.
As for games specifically released this year, Balatro took more of my time than I’d like to admit. Very tight gameplay, immediately fun and satisfying, anyone could pick up this game and have a great time.
I don’tike to list Early Access games because of their propensity to change as development goes on, but Fallen Aces was one of the most unique first person action games I’ve played in a very long time.
Anyways long rant is long, I’d recommend not falling for the year end GOTY list hype and just focus on what you liked the most. GOTY lists are also a great way to build up FOMO within yourself, possibly persuading you to go out and spend money on a game just because Geoff Keighly said it was the best game he played all year
