Sony rumored to be buying FromSoftware

Thought this deserved it's own thread.

Pretty impressive purchase if it goes through, and not as bad for PC players as it would have been just a few years ago. Would expect a delay for any future FromSoft games between launching on PS and coming to PC.

FromSoft is a sure-fire homerun hitter, as opposed to the gaggle of developers that Microsoft bought (with the exception of Activision Call of Duty.

The industry continues to consolidate, but there are new developers, and AAA developers, coming online every year. Sony and Microsoft can't purchase everyone.

A delay would definitely annoy me, possibly enough to make me buy a PS5 as Im already leaning that way just to play Demons Souls and Bloodborne. My kid also saw an Astrobot video and has been asking me about it. Guess that wouldnt hurt Sony at all.

I'm a little concerned they might push Fromsoft to produce games in a way they havent been before, the way Jim Ryan reportedly pushed for live service over the last few years annoyed quite a few devs and ended up with Concord. It only takes the wrong CEO to doom everything that was working perfectly well before.

Another question is, how long can From keep up the run of hits even if left to their own devices? Elden Ring was great, but really it was just bigger Dark Souls. Now they cant go much bigger than that without it being too bloated I wonder where they would go next. Armored Core VI was fun and Sekiro was great. I'd hope that they would have some fresh ideas that still retained their style, but they surely have to miss sometime, its only natural. When they do, how will Sony react to that?

They can buy a developer as a business, but they can't buy the actual developers. I read a Reddit post recently about how video game developers should be treated more like movie stars, such that you play a game because you like the work of those who made it, not because of who owns it.

If all of the talent at FromSoft left you won't get any more sure-fire homeruns, regardless of what IPs the company has.

That's why I backed Underworld Ascendant. I keep it on my Steam "Favorites" list to remind me never to do so again.

However, if the FromSoft folks were to sell the store to Sony, then all leave and create a new company ("ToHard," naturally), they could all make some great money. ;)

It is what it is.

Disappointing if they start cranking out games yearly--though it seems like Sony is doing a generally good job these days at not being Activision--but how many times can From really go back to the same well anyway? Elden Ring is good, but honestly, I've enjoyed the Dark Souls series much, much more.

If From folds or goes into the toilet from an acquisition, there will be plenty of other developers and studios willing to pick-up the mantle. Look at Lies of P as an example, a game I've enjoyed much, much more than Elden Ring.

Tangent: still need to beat the final boss in Lies of P, but feels kind of...pointless? Like, I'm well aware that I can do it given enough tries and then I'll roll credits, so I'm not really sure of the incentive. Maybe I should set a challenge for myself, like try to get under 15 tries or something.
