Has anybody played this game? I've read good reviews about it, however there's one thing I haven't understood yet: will you meet other players online? In short, is it a MMORPG?

It is definitely not an MMO. It is a single or multiplayer rpg. I have it, I've tried to play it, and it's a pretty rough around the edges sort of game. It also gives you little to no direction, but there's a lot you can do and get yourself into. It's also fairly unforgiving. If you can look past the jankiness and like big exploration based RPGs with no real quest structure or hand holding, then you'll dig it. If not, you will probably hate it.
