Monster Hunter World Iceborne: Status Effects and How to Counter them

Monster Hunter World features a great variety of beasts that players battle as part of quests, receiving rewards in the form of XP and loot that helps them upgrade their gear. However, these powerful creatures are no pushovers, and often they can hit the player with attacks that afflict them with ailments – referred to as status effects – that have a negative impact as long as they last.

Status effects in the game are of two different categories – Elemental Blights and Abnormal Status Ailments. We’ll be going over each of them and how you can go about getting rid of them.

Elemental Blights

1. Fireblight

Effect: HP gradually decreases without leaving recoverable damage.
Cure: Roll on the ground thrice, eat a Nullberry, or use a Cleanser Booster.

2. Waterblight

Effect: Slows stamina recovery.
Cure: Eat a Nullberry, or use a Cleanser Booster.

3. Thunderblight

Effect: Makes the player more susceptible to be afflicted with Stun.
Cure: Roll on the ground up to 7 times, eat a Nullberry, or use a Cleanser Booster.

4. Iceblight

Effect: Increases stamina consumption.
Cure: Eat a Nullberry or use a Cleanser Booster.

5. Dragonblight

Effect: Player won’t be able to inflict any Elemental damage or Status Effect build up using their weapons for up to one minute.
Cure: Eat a Nullberry or use a Cleanser Booster.

Abnormal Status Ailments

1. Paralysis

Effect: Renders player unable to move for a short duration.
Cure: Wears off over time or when the player is knocked airborne by an attack. Continuously providing movement input also speeds up the recovery time.

2. Sleep

Effect: Player gradually becomes drowsy and falls asleep on the spot.
Cure: Quickly drink an energy drink before falling asleep, otherwise wait until the effect wears off after a short duration or until you are attacked.

3. Poison

Effect: HP is gradually depleted.
Cure: Wait for it to wear off, or use either Antidote or Herbal Medicine.

4. Stun

Effect: Player is incapacitated for a short duration.
Cure: Wait for it to wear off. Being attacked will also break the stun effect. Continuously providing movement input also speeds up the recovery time.

5. Covered in Mud

Effect: Movement becomes restricted.
Cure: Wait for it to wear off.

6. Bleeding

Effect: Any action besides walking will cause a loss in HP.
Cure: Crouch until it wears off or eat meat-based foods.

7. Defense down

Effect: Defense is lowered.
Cure: Eat an Adamant Seed.

8. Effuvial Buildup

Effect: Lowers maximum health.
Cure: Leave the Effuvium-filled area, wait for it to wear off, or eat a Nullberry.

Annoying as they may be, status effects are part of what makes the combat of the game interesting and varied, with real dangers to be seeking protection from.
