I realize its not the point of the thread but its easier to name mechanics that make me interested at the moment. If it has a good parry I'm listening, if it has some Rogue Lite progression I'll take a look, if it has deck building I'll check it out.

If it has a lot of what I perceive as grind I'm out, if its a 3d open world I'll take some convincing.

i would say it hasn't changed for years. Action adventures (the thinking man's action game!) still my fav followed closely by RPGs and Shooters.

The report I was reading noted how many Action-Adventure games have blended into being RPGs, as well, and through much of the report they considered that a single category.

I intended to put "Other" but ran out of permissible options, and ARPGs are RPGs. There are enough different types of RPGs that they could have their own poll 🙂

xenforo doesn't see a difference between them but I would say its based on length of the form

i would call them action games with RPG elements. But i wouldn't call them ARPGs as that is exclusively for stuff like diablo, POE, Grimdawn et al.

of course it depends on the blend i suppose. is it an action game first with (token or not fully fleshed out) RPG elements (like leveling) eg: Deus Ex or is it an RPG with action (Dragons age, the 1st Mass effect or KOTOR or an mmo maybe? ).
