Question Install PCIe 4.0 NVME on PCIe 3.0 Motherboard

Hi all! I have the motherboard Asus Z270 with i5-7600 CPU. Both not support PCIe 4.0 SSD. My friend gift me the Patriot P400 https://ssdrive.net/patriot-p400-1-tb that works with Gen 4 slots. The slots looks like the same, but I am afraid to get short circuit or other PC issues. Is it safe to use Gen 4.0 SSD on old generation motherboard or I can get the problem?
