Gaming Monitors ideas

The screen is pretty reflective but I had a plastic protective sheet still on screen, so it might have added to it.

I can't replicate it now as I have room set up so the monitors are between me and the window. I can see reflections easier in that the old one, but not by a lot. I have lamps positioned so that I can't see them in screens

Pdly2d4.jpeg

Having fun with 2nd monitor, it sometimes turns self off at start and I need to press the joystick button under it to wake it up. And then sometimes it loads wrong wallpaper

Just updated firmware on new monitor. Its software meant to load with windows but wasn't.

Online suggests its because I am missing a cable but Anort has same model and only cable he has attached to screen is the Display Port one, and he says he doesn't need the cable. Otherwise I need to buy another cable... which is annoying as I was near the store that sells them earlier. Monitor did come with a cable but I can guess its too short, the power cable is only just long enough now.

If using HDMI or DisplayPort: Yes, you typically need a USB upstream cable (USB-B or USB-C to USB-A) connected between your monitor and PC for the software to communicate with the monitor

I had 3 months to get this right lol. I thought I needed a USB C cable, nope... USB B... the printer cable as its sold in all shops. I have one for my amp but its not long enough ... looks in another drawer, finds another USB A toi B cable, its also too short... I have about 3 of them but they all only about 1 metre long.

I was running my keyboard off a USB extension cable, so instead I used that cable to link to the USB B Cable. Plugged that into monitor and then plugged KB into monitor as well, as its got a KVM built in. Still probably buy a long one but its not as needed now.

Those pictures are awesome.

Gawd, I hate USB B. And if you saw my cables, you'd be appalled. Actually, I'm appalled. Using a lap desk for my monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc. is just a mess. I'm actually planning to start using wireless here soon.

Those pictures are awesome.
i have used the same guy for my desktop images for as long as he has made them... so about 30 years now

they not free or at least, not all of them. Some might be.

I should set up both monitors as landscape and use some of his dual monitor images. He also does Triples but that isn't going to happen. I don't have space for that... love to have a monitor stand that held one of mine above the other in landscape... I can't afford it without looking.

I have 3 USB A to B cables, my Amp has the connection on its back. So have to use it to connect to my streamer. The other two... one came with this monitor, think other one came with the amp but it wasn't long enough. I am sure I have a longer one somewhere. Think I have a really long one as I used to connect amp to PC and they were never close. No idea where it is... I collect cables. I should really go through them... one day.

Cables... mum complains about all mine but my 5.1 speakers are to blame for most of them... 5 satellite speakers with a cable each. Then 2 Display port cables. Three network cables, one running from wall to network switch and then two running from it to streamer and PC. Or would be if streamer was plugged in.

Power is a little cleaner now it all runs off the UPS. 2 USB cables running to monitor now, one for communication, and other for my Keyboard - although it could run wireless, I can never tell what charge it has, so easier to just leave connected.

I could run mouse off monitor as well, wonder if its dongle would work directly attached. wait, nvm its USB C so would have to use cable. still make it easier for charging

the worst part is most of the cables all in one area.
ilrixp7.jpeg

but I don't walk around in there... so its okay. Blames the UPS & the subwoofer for speakers which is the controller for the rest of them... they all plug into it. Hence cables.

The test tonight is to see if the red lights on the stand stay off now its attached to PC. Same with if the RGB on back shuts off when PC is off. Before I attached the cable, the stand lights turned off with windows and then turned self back on. and the RGB stayed on all night last night...

If they behave, great. Otherwise I just disable them.

AMD broke a function in the display drivers that allow me to talk directly to Monitor via Display Port.

Its meant to be fixed now but I can't seem to enable it in the OSD of the monitor.
I have run DDU twice today, and realised it doesn't uninstall all of it if you have AI Chat installed.
I installed Adrenailine, it didn't load on desktop... erm
ran ddu and removed again
did normal install... still wouldn't load on desktop... um
Ran the AMD Clean-up utility that removes all AMD except for Chipset drivers - thankfully

That fixed it. Adrenaline loads now, but it didn't fix monitor.
AMD fixed the function in bonus drivers released in Feb so I installed those first... 26.2.1
that didn't fix it.
updated them to latest
didn't fix it

every time i did this I also reset the OSD on the monitor, and its run a pixel clean about 3 times today

other fixes include not using the KVM function, so I took everything off monitor now.
unplugged monitor from pc to see if I could reset OSD without it attached, but it doesn't show that menu when not plugged in.

Tried using the DP cable that came with monitor, which meant moving the other monitor and having the new one on the chest of drawers, since default cable shorter
No change.

not a location I like it in, it just fits
qZLkfCa.jpeg

uninstalled and reinstalled its software, no change...

Running out of ideas, I posted here

At least the AI is gone

So typical, I write out a question and then do another google search and find

If you cannot enable DDC/CI in your ASUS OSD, it is likely disabled or greyed out because of conflicting settings like Adaptive-Sync (FreeSync/G-Sync), GamePlus, or HDR. To fix this, disable Adaptive-Sync/VRR in the OSD

So I did, and it now does show the function is enabled. Joy.

I always seem to work out problems just after I ask for help. Its one of the reasons I don't ask very often.

I started out trying to get the Asus Widget to load with windows.
I am not 100% happy with the answer I found.

Turning VRR off gets rid of Freesync. I am sure I need it...

Enabling it does let it talk to the app but I am not sure I like answer.

Its not worth the trade off although Super Resolution does seem to work.
I hate wasting time trying to fix problems

Either way the app doesn't load with windows... so I turned vrr on as its more useful than just having an app start. I can set up a scheduled task to load it and I have pinned to task bar.

I added it to startup apps on task manager

Could say this is a bookmark... oh wait, I will bookmark it

So anyway, I think I probably get this in 6 months or so
Unless Asus announce an updated version before then

I contemplated a 34inch QHD screen until I saw price was 1500 above price of above.

4k encroaching on 1440p territory even more now:
27 inch 4k
They've got 27 free ones, and I downloaded a couple. I use Wallpaper Engine, but I upload my own pictures that I've made in Flux and I have it set to rotate pictures every 30 seconds. Here's what my background currently is:

full

you can animate them. I have one where snow is falling, for instance, and one where people are wandering around

i have about 10 years worth of his images around. Last 5 years or so all 1440p but before that there are a load of 4k. Any before that were 1080p and he has larger versions or updated ones.
I have had this one for ages.
pTMS39E.jpeg

I need to find the images that look good on the vertical monitor. Its using 4k images, hence the 2 here look very similar. The Vert takes a snap shot of the middle of the screen, so I need to look through a bunch and find the ones that have the most interesting middles.

this one works better
oukhLZL.jpeg

I like planets or surfaces... so combos work

at least the large one doesn't suffer from burn in...

One thing I need to make sure to cover is the watermark in bottom right. Burn in won't happen any time soon but I feel its best to just cover that area if I think of it. Monitor has a load of features designed to reduce it. And I try not to have the same windows in same place.

On the ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDMR, you cannot simultaneously enable DDC/CI and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) because of a known technical restriction within the monitor's OSD/firmware to ensure system stability, particularly when using DisplayPort 2.1

You know, thats the sort of thing I would have liked to have found two nights ago, before I tried to figure out why I couldn't have both... Or maybe before I bought screen.

Monitor works for most part. I just been chasing my tail trying to figure it out.
Since I have to pick:

VRR is more useful in games, DDC CI just lets me change monitor settings... perhaps I just use the OSD for that.

It doesn't help that Anorts model does let him use both at once, mainly as his model isn't DP 2.1
So I guess it was a trade off, better DP version in exchange with software that only works properly if you disable one thing. The one thing being Freesync.

I bet the PG32UCDM3 fixes that... I don't know for sure. Not like I am buying it anyway... where would I put it?

Now to make Youtube stop showing me videos about displays/TV's

To be fair, I hadn't really looked into potential problems apart from knowing about the AMD thing, and I hadn't planned on buying this model, so I hadn't looked at it very hard. Unlike the original version which Anort has and the new one. And its still an unknown if the new one can run both at once. To me anyway... not wasting time looking into it.

Most things I buy I look at all the reviews but this is something you would only learn from users, unless its mentioned on the website for model... and I may have missed it if it was, as I wasn't looking for problems.

Its on me, I decided on the day they offered it, as I was tired of waiting. And I doubt I would have found this in reviews anyway. Its only now I think... I could have looked on forums... but I didn't.

I will leave VRR off until I decide to play a game, then I can just turn it on in OSD. Its the first choice in the first menu, so easy to access. Its no big deal, the app loaded with windows now that I have added it. I will mostly use display on desktop more than games.

Advice appears to be to turn VRR off anyway on my model to avoid flickering, so I have to assume I just leave it in DCC/CI mode and go with flow.

Curious why 3dmark wouldn't run yesterday

I found out the guy who makes the desktop wallpapers I use also makes watermark free versions for Plus members, so I can download those and not need to worry about the fact his watermark is always in the same place. No burn in.
Just need to replace my fav wallpapers with watermark free ones now.

Hey, I just learned something about HDR and Windows that might be of help to you. If you use the calibration tool, and the final setting, which is "saturation" does little to nothing, then you need to turn off HDR in the Windows settings. Apparently, some monitors, like mine, already do HDR all the time. They have these systems that automatically convert non-HDR signals. If your monitor is one of these, then turning on HDR in the Windows settings messes this up and your picture ends up washed out. It's not just the "saturation" setting though. Basically, if you can't get it right with the calibration tool, then you are supposed to turn it off. The saturation setting is just the one that usually gives it away.

If I turn HDR on in the monitor software, it turns it on in windows as well. I can't have one on without the other.

Fairly sure mine doesn't have HDR on at all times, as if I swap it to HDR it shows more options and the screen flashes off when I swap to it

Off
JQsc5hl.jpeg

I currently use the RTS/RPG Setting, still working out what I like - sRGB is the most accurate, rest are brighter

On
wKCcjPj.jpeg

With it on, I get 4 varieties of HDR to pick from.

Really, just using chrome for HDR videos shows if its on or not.

Yeah, your monitor is much more feature complete than any portable monitor. I got the best portable I could find, but it's not going to have all the stuff a good ASUS monitor will have. Mine does have a great picture, though, at least compared to the laptops I used to use.

I have swapped to sRGB again, as everything else is too saturated. I may need to adjust as my LG isn't the brightest. I am used to how it looks. The other settings remind me of how Samsung boosts colours on its Galaxy phones.

It could be the fact my desktop wallpaper is really dark and all colours in browsers pop in comparison.
Ra8sZVo.jpeg

Dark backgrounds better for Oled, and I tend to stick to them anyway.

Viewing angles on Oled way better than my TN panel. Its not as noticeable to me with LG standing vertically but if it was landscape, you just didn't see the right image until dead on. colours would be different.

The pictures are different so it's hard to tell, but your new monitor looks gorgeous to me.

I wasn't really comparing them.

Here is the same image on both, that wallpaper isn't as interesting on LG, and it looks better with planets, and might keep using the previous image.

X1j4d32.jpeg

They only look about same colours if I turn my lamp off behind me. Any light falling onto old one changes how it looks, but with lights off they more similar. lamp in the corner behind monitors not bright enough for me to see keyboard at night. I should move it to next to monitors... if it was just a normal bulb and not a smart bulb. they really hate it when I unplug them, pain to get working again. It might be last thing I move lol. Easier to arrange room around it.

already? It seems too soon, like only a week ago.

5k is retina now? I remember when 4k was retina... any excuse to sell you a new monitor.
Dual mode being 1440p means these are 27 inch monitors. One way to not see pixels.
5k seems a waste at that size.

It only makes sense if its a way to stop selling 1440p screens. If its just an option on a monitor that can also run faster, more sales. I mean, gamers seem happy at 1080p but monitor makers don't want us to just stop, how do they get us onto 16k?

while idea of replacing my LG with a Oled did flicker over mind, it wasn't realistic. Maybe in 5 years time.
Wonder what resolutions they be pushing then

What ever you do, make sure GPU can run close to max speed. Otherwise its just painful.

They aren't going to get rid of 1440p any time soon. There are over 300 1080p monitors available on Amazon right now. No matter what the hardware makers want, if people keep buying 1080p or 1440p then the manufacturers have to either make them or just give up that business, I don't anticipate them giving up that large of a market.

The panel makers may stop. TV's getting massive and keeping the tooling around to make smaller panels might not be cost effective.

Always be a market for 1080p monitors in offices. But gaming monitors may become harder to get at that resolution unless they also run 1000hz. Need to get rid of that resolution before 1440p is under threat. I won't be getting one again as 27 inch is too small for me now. I am used to 32 inch

So HDR is calibrated, and looks okay now.
Now its time to fix normal.

Just a few modes to pick from
  • AI Visual
  • RTS/RPG
  • FPS
  • Cinema
  • Scenery
  • Racing
  • sRGB
  • MOBA
  • Night Vision
  • User
All different
I would have to install something for AI Visual to work, I think it matches a mode to what is on screen.

sRGB is what I had on last monitor, or at least, its not on fire like the rest of them are.
Cinema is very blue/dark
MOBA and Night Vision are very odd. Night Vision turns everything green.

I can't just use sRGB as I need to adjust to brighter screen.

Think I adjust User as its the custom one. 65k colour temp meant to be closest to reality (according to video I watched). reduced saturation as that seems to be how rest are, over abundance of colour

Oled Care has a Pixel Clean process that checks screen every 2/4/8 or never hours and turns display off for 6 minutes.
I had mine set to 4 hours. It just reminds you, its up to you to run it while PC is on.

So I just did and when it got to the end it starting cycling through Red/Green/Blue & White over and over. I wasn't sure if it was normal or not, having only had it for almost a week now. I hadn't seen it before.

Lucky Anort has the same monitor and I asked if it was normal...

no.

So I restarted the PC - one advantage of having two taskbars and two monitors.

It loaded normally... relief. Then I looked into it

If your ASUS OLED monitor is cycling through a Red, Green, Blue, and White (RGB) color loop, it has locked up in a factory diagnostic or "burn-in" mode, rather than actually performing a proper Pixel Cleaning cycle. This is a known firmware issue, particularly on the XG27UCDMG and similar OLED models

This glitch commonly triggers immediately after a Pixel Cleaning finishes or if the monitor drops its display signal during the process

Great lol... Anort never seen it. Lucky him. Can't I go through a day this week without problems? Wonder if I should look at the other common problems so I know what to do.

I also found out:
Never manually trigger Pixel Cleaning unless you see visible image retention: Asus OLED Care is designed to work automatically in standby mode. Running it manually too frequently can wear out the OLED panel prematurely.

That does seem to apply to a longer process than the 6 minute one. As Asus suggest to run it every 4 hours but it depends how bright screen is... so back to dark wallpapers, Brighter makes pixels work harder

I set the reminder to never as don't really need a reminder if I just remember to do it myself.

I set it to turn screen off after 3 minutes. Shame you can't do it per monitor.

HDR was calibrated using the Windows tool but I was sure my colours on SDR was not right.

I have followed the instructions in this to get it better

I went with wide gammut as might as well use the features of the monitor, sRGB isn't as vivid.
Setting it in OSD means I don't really need the software running except to swap to HDR.
I restarted app so it could copy settings from OSD as it was showing the old settings. Lucky OSD over rules it or I would have had to enter them again. Easier to do in OSD as more things are changeable there.

Now to just get used to it.

think its saturation level was too high. reds seemed to glow. I had 80, should be about 50 to be nuetral

The dark theme on here isn't as hard to use now, my eyes didn't like it much last week. I realise that was screen settings, it was too bright and colours were radioactive.

nope, eyes seems to have trouble focusing with the dark theme, way easier on light.
