Desert Island games

There was a topic on this before but it was centered on series. It ended up being about which series or franchise was largest so it would have more content to take on a desert island. Let me try something different.

Imagine yourselves cast away on a desert island, and choose eight individual computer games to take with you, that are available to play now. You shall have a computer that works without electricity and plays any game spotlessly, on an offline launcher, CD, diskettes, tapes you name it. Strangely the machine only plays computer formats, no consoles.

These will be the only 8 that you will play, perhaps for many decades. Since there is no communication with the outside world, no online games are elligible.

Would you choose games that are personal favourites because you will never tire of them?
Would you choose games with quite a lot of play in them?
Would you choose games with randomized features so that every game would feel different?
Would you choose a variety of different genres or just the best from your favourite genre?
Would you choose stuff you've already played to death because they're your favourites already or stuff you've never played before but are really interested in?

  1. Torchlight 2 with all the mods I have now
  2. Sacred 2 with CM Patch (I have that now) - I might even remember how to play it again. Might play all the classes, and not just one.
  3. Diablo 2 (latest version)
  4. Grim Dawn (if I can find a version that doesn't need steam logon)

Now games that aren't ARPG which I could play forever. (I could make entire list ARPG but I will resist)

  1. Civ 6
  2. Fallout New Vegas - I might even finish it
  3. to be continued
  4. to be continued

I will edit the last two when I think of two more.

I can't pick my fav game as Journey without internet would just get boring.
I live on a desert Island but luckily it has internet or I wouldn't be here typing this now :)

It's definitely going to be the games with a ridiculous amount of content and preferably lots of randomisation. Let's say we don't include mods, but do include all DLC.

  1. Rimworld
  2. The Witcher 3
  3. Total War: Warhammer III
  4. The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim
  5. Baldur's Gate 3
  6. Civilization V
  7. Fallout: New Vegas
  8. FrogComposband

With The Witcher 3 being the only game in the list I haven't played yet.

1. I'd pick a Civ game. Unfortunately Civ 7 is unavailable at the time of posting. So Civ 6 I guess. I own Civ 6 but not played a great amount. It has great replayability and games last hours and hours. Also a chance to sharpen my strategic mind.

2. I think next a GTA. Another game that has a lot to do and would keep me occupied. The only GTA I haven't completed is GTA V so I'd pick that one. I'd be happy trying to 100% it.

3. A racing game would add variety. Forza Horizon 5 is fun, not bad on a controller, and has a lot of content.

4. I think I'd take a gamble on a space game. I'm not too good at the flying aspect but I'd have time to learn and they look interesting. Elite Dangerous is a classic so I'm going to pick that one.

5. Another large game. Halo: The Master Chief collection. It's another game I've wanted to 100% and has multiple games in one.

6. Red Dead Redemption 2 is a game that obviously follows my theme and I have it in my backlog.

7. Maybe a puzzle game for number 7. The Talos Principle would be my pick.

8. Lastly I'm going for variety again. I think I'd pick a fighting game this time. Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection has some classic games and would give me something to learn.

1. Transport Fever 2 - I've played this series for only about 170-hours, but it's easily a forever game.

2. Kingdom Come: Deliverance - I actually kind of want to start another playthrough of this, but I'm also tempted to keep working on my village.

3. Dwarf Fortress - Might as well figure this out finally.

4. Armoured Commander 2 - A game I've only played 8-hours of so far, but I could easily see myself playing it for ages and ages

5. Darkest Dungeon 2 - Only just got back into it, but could easily see it having lots of different options to play around with for ages.

6. Half-Life - Still a classic, though I haven't played it in quite awhile now, I have been meaning to go back to it again.

7. Deus Ex -Still a favorite. There was a period in my life where I played it every year. Been awhile since I did that, but I still do dip my toes back in here and there. Still a great game.

8. Command & Conquer: Remastered - Two games for the price of one! Plus I do just keep heading back to it and playing a match here and there. Still love it.

I may come back and edit this later, but we'll see.

First, I would like to request that we move this to a deserted island rather than a desert island. Also, I want a magical food and beverage machine. And the USC dance team (I like dancing, get your minds out of the gutter).

1) Satisfactory with all mods available.
2) Workers & Resources: Soviet Republic--the deepest most expansive city builder
3) Kingdoms Reborn--one of the deepest most expansive colony sims
4) Euro Truck Simulator with all DLC and mods
5) Total War Warhammer 3 with all DLC and mods
6) Civ 5 with all DLC and mods
7) Farm Together 1 (because 2 isn't finished yet) with all DLC
8) XCOM 2 with all DLC and mods.

But it's still paradoxical seing Civilization reign in the absence of civilization!
Maybe we will get it right virtually. Plenty of things have been tried in reality and never worked, should have been beta tested in software. Might have worked out some things never work. People may not have died in vain.

Hmmm...

The latest Flight Simulator I can get and still not be 'online.' This will allow me to scour the planet and figure out where I've been stranded. Then maybe I can get a message out with the lat/long somehow or at least figure out which way to start swimming. (No, "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego" is not an acceptable substitute!)

Green Hell - to teach me how to not die. Though that's a rain forest and this is a desert, it will have to do.

I'll re-label some encyclopedia-on-CD and smuggle it in as a game. Should be lots of good knowledge in there - like how to make a fire, ocean currents in the area, and so on. I'll want to see about how I can claim this island for future development opportunities, too. (If the Howle family could so it with Gilligan's Island, so can I!)

My future firmly established, let's see what games I have room for, just in case it doesn't work out and I do get stuck here.

Dwarf Fortress: Good idea @BeardyHat ! I'll want the source code, too, so I can tamper with it.

Age of Wonders 4: I loved Planetfall, this should be good as well.

Baldur's Gate 3 plus all mods - and there are a lot of them!

Troubleshooter: Abandoned Children and all DLC. So many build options, and so big!

Dead or Alive 6 and all mods/DLC - to keep my reflexes up. (Reflexes, dammit! Quit snickering!!)

First, I would like to request that we move this to a deserted island rather than a desert island.
I request we move this to a dessert island. Takes care of the whole food & water problem. Include a cure for diabetes if needed - and I think everyone will need it after a few weeks.

Not to split hairs but you'll find it's valid for both meanings.
People say desert islands, but it means deserted. It's just an old use of the word desert to mean deserted, but it doesn't make sense anymore because "desert island" is the only time it's used that way now. You wouldn't say an empty building was a desert building.

Anyway, I was just picking on you :)

One of my first picks would have been Minecraft ( VR if possible). Not because it is one of my top favorite games, but because the game has a procedural-generated world so each adventure would feel different. You can also spend tons of time building different structures, even large cities, so there would be a lot of time to use the brain.

The next would have been Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 because I know I will like it (playing the first one now) and I would not mind a medieval scenario to indulge in. It also has romance and hopefully, you can own a house so that I could make my own little virtual family.

No Man Sky (VR if possible) would be an easy pick. Also procedural-generated and with an incredible deep variety of flora and fauna it would have made my stay on the desert island feel much better.

Forza Horizon 5 would be next because I would have enjoyed testing out all the different cars, doing stunts and just driving around not really thinking about much.

Lucas Chess because I would have enjoyed getting better in chess and from what I hear that program is one of the better one for that.

Baldur's Gate 3 because it is one of my favorite games and I know I will enjoy countless more hours in it.

Sims 3 seems interesting enough that I would have picked it up for the stay. Never played it, but I can see making up different personalities would be fun and could even be a way to take out some of the frustration of being stranded.

The last would be some type of interactive sex game (VR if possible) with tons of customizations making Larry Laffer jump in joy.
