Complete amateur needing advice!

I’ve trawled some threads and sites and this seems the most likely to give me advice- so apologies for my lack of knowledge. I want to get something for m husband without getting a full console- kids have a switch and he likes that and used to have an Xbox . I came accross a backbone PlayStation controller for IOS. I can’t quite work out what it is and if it would work as a stand alone device with his iPhone or if it would only work with a console?
He would know but I wanted to get it for him for Christmas!
Would be very grateful for someone with more knowledge to explain this to me in very basic terms, thanks in advance!

the pro+/pro2 are quality wireless controllers (I have one myself), and have an option to get a phone clip (very useful, I have that too)

just find 8bitdo pro2 and a phone holder clip wherever you people in the UK shop for electronics.
