Can someone compare Age of Empires IV to Total War for me?

Game looks fun, but I've never played an Age of Empires game before. What's the difference between this and a Total War game?

I haven't played IV but previous Age of Empires are more like Command & Conquer than Total War.

Mixed with a bit of Civ as the ages pass your units become more modern.

AoE2 might be your best bet if you only pick one. I've seen somewhere that 4 is most like 2.

Still playing Rome: Total War. I always enjoy kickin' Roman butts with the Carthaginians.

As it turns out, IV was on PC Game Pass, so I got to try it out. Wasn't really my thing. It's one of those games where you click on a little person and then on a tree, and they become lumberjacks and start bringing wood to the village. I never really got into those. Looks like it gets pretty crazy by the end. Wouldn't mind watching someone play it--someone I know, not a YouTuber.
