Why Are You Upgrading: first build in approx. 15yrs

Budget: £1500 (equates to $1800/$1900)

Approximate Purchase Date: asap

Use Case: gaming only, I don't do any production / photoshop / streaming

Monitor: 32in Samsung 4k @ 120hz - I realise I won't be maxing this out but I already have it.

Overclocking: No - 7600x appears not to respond well to overclocking and it's really not necessary with the RAM from my understanding

Additional Comments: I think I'll mostly be trying to game at 4k and if that's below 50/60fps I'll drop the resolution to 1440p. Looking to play Starfield, Forza Motorsport and whatever Total War games are churned out.

Any thoughts are welcome.

asrock live mixer is a great board for the money imo, so is aorus elite/gigabyte gaming.

for cooling, save some and get a liquid freezer 2.

- Going with the aircooler for sure.
- Dropped the mobo, though this gigabyte board seems to have a fair few less powerstages than others in the bracket. Is this an issue?
- Dropped the psu the RMe version. £30 cheaper and from my reading just a bit noisier, but 99% of use will be with headphones on.
- Case, undecided based on looks/vanity lol.

looks good.
don't skimp on the case, you'll be happily using it for 10+ years if you get a good one.
I can recommend the p600s myself. built like a tank. fabric mesh ftw. non restrictive, cool looking and super easy to clean (just put it under tap water and let it dry) plus it has front/top mesh covers with sound dampening materials, so you can turn your airflow case into silent one in 2 seconds.

No benefit that I know of. Used to be that SSD's were very expensive so it made sense to get a cheaper smaller drive, that was the only reason I'm aware of.

That's my current SSD setup, and will be for any future build also. Benefits are speedy system backup, speedy system restore, and a lot of flexibility with cloning, copying, moving and backing up disks.

I'll explain my storage setup, which may help:

C: 256GB SSD for Win10 OS & a lot of software
This is deliberately small to make my monthly disk images—just before the monthly MS OS updates—quick and easy, with a verified image in 30 minutes. Guide in my sig.

These images mean if Windows or SSD crash n burn, I can be back up & running in ~30 minutes—proven twice back in 2016 when Win10 was still a bit flaky. I recommend Macrium Reflect for this.

SSD is much faster than HDD, and so should contain files which are being used frequently—mainly OS, software installations, and your current game.

D: 4TB HDD for data
Most personal & work files go here into an organized folder structure. When it got fullish, I moved media files off it onto the external. C:'s images live here too.

Things like documents and photos are only accessed occasionally, so there's little benefit from having them on a fast SSD.

You can install Steam games on this disk, and easily swap them onto a faster drive when you want to play them. Nifty system which can manage limited storage space and today's large install sizes nicely.

A separate drive for your own data also makes moving it to another PC very easy—just take it out and physically attach to new machine. The new one could be a laptop if you use an external holder for the drive—I use that 'toaster' design as it will clone or copy drives very simply, HDD or SSD.

G: 1TB SSD for games
I don't do much with this drive, no backup because it's not a big deal if it goes bust—just download & install current games again and start afresh, or resume if there's an online save.

I don't play recent games, yet my largest is 130GB. Since my internet isn't great, I picked up this drive to keep games I want to replay. SSD can be a big help for games—always with the launch, sometimes also during play—so it's worth it imo.

External 4TB USB backup drive for minding D:'s data files and latest C: images.
Rarely accessed files—which are over 80% of all data files—can be zipped to save a lot of space.

S: 64GB USB in router for our network needs.
Very handy, since we leave the router on all the time but switch our PCs off—no space consumed, no need to leave other PC on so other person can have access to shared files.
No need to backup since we both have copies of its contents for working on.

Biz server holds backup of vital data
Upload speed is too slow for any more—but I'll probably move to using OneDrive 'sometime' soon, since I have it as part of our biz software.

No optical drive
Gone the way of the floppy.

Try this. The 120mm fan goes inside the back of that case for a rear exhaust fan.

Extremely happy with the performance.

The 7900xt is a really great card that's constantly working above the 2500mhz advertised boost clock speed.

The Phanton Spirit cooler is top notch too.

CPU/GPU temps are very good even under load.

That load being Starfield at ultra 1440p and the past couple days Forza Motorsport ultra 4k.
